DEATH CLAIMS
COL. STEAGALL
Aged Texas Pioneer and
State Builder Mourn-
ed by Many.
Aransas Pass Business Directory
The community was bereaved
last Saturday upon the announce-
ment of the death of Col. A. H
Steagall, which occurred at 2:3C
p. m. He had been ailing a little
for sometime,but was not thought
to be seriously ill, but owing to
his advanced age he became grad-
ually weaker and passed to the
Great Beyond a3 peacefully as
going to sleep. His funeral was
held Sunday at the Methodist
church, Rev. Goddard officiat-
ing-
Col. Steagall was the father of
W. F. and S. S. Steagall and
Mrs. C. R. Rigg, all well known
residents in or near Aransas Pass.
He was born in Georgia in 1828
and in 1849 went to California
during the gold rush where he re-
mained a year searching for the
yellow metal. He was married in
Wilmington, N...C., in 1854 and
moved to Texas with his slaves
in 1858 when he. settled in Rush
county on the Angulena river.
At the outbreak of the war he
joined one of the first regiments
that went to the front from Tex-
as. After the war he left his
plantation and in 1867 he found .1!
the town of Valley Hills, building
a large flouring mill there. Af-
terwards he was a merchant at
the terminus of the Texas Cen-
tral railroad from Calvert to
Dallas. In 1879 he removed to
San Antonio where he resided
for ten years, moving from there
to DeLand, Florida, where he'
lived twenty years.
Col. Steagall lived in the stir-
ring times when he numbered
among his intimate friends sucn
men as Roger Q. Mills, Richard
Cope,. Dick Hubbard, John H.
• Reagan and Dave Culberson. He
was a life long consistent demo-
, crat and was always a leader in
t all reform movements of relig-
I iotrs, civic and political life. He
was a pure minded man with a
gift of always seeing the sunny
side of life; was a devoted lov-
er of little children, a passion
that increased with his weight of
• years; was ever ready to espouse
the cause of the weak and friend-
less and was staunch and stead-
fast in his friendship.
Col. Steagall lived more than
the allotted span allowed to
man, but every year was filled
his efforts toward uplifting hu-
manity and bettering the condi-
tions of the world.
’While" his immediate relatives
and myriad of friends sincerely
mourn his death, they feel that
one of God’s good men has gone
to a well-earned and peaceful
rest.

for his home town which found
their way into the columns of the
Dallas News, which says:
F, L. Clendening of Aransas
Pass, was a buyer in the market
yesterday. He said: “The truck
growers in our section doubled
their acreage this winter,
! and they are now placing their
■! vegetables on the market. Four
of the biggest commission houses
iu the north have buyers at
Aransas .Pass, who are paying
cash for cabbage, tomatoes, let-
tuce and other green stuff. About
75,000 bales of Texas cotton were
season. We have two ships a
month in the coastwise trade from
New York, and two ships a week
from Tampico. We have twenty-
five feet of water in the harbor,
and the government has just
made an appropriation, to give us
five feet additional which will
le+ in the largest ocean-going ves-
sels. As Aransas Pass is the
nearest Gulf port to the Panama
Canal, we are looking forward to
great things when the canal is op-
ened for ships. The town is al-
ready growing rapidly, and all
lines of business ar£ flourishing”
NEW WAY TO FIND WATER. RENAMED BY THE IRISH.
An Arizona observer has found
out how to tell by the mesquite
whether water is near the surface
or not. When the mesquite grows
up into treeform the ground wat-
er lies within fifty feet of the
surface, but if it remains a shrub
prospects for finding water are
not so good. We are always
learning that every natural phe-
nomenon has meaning for us, if
we can only read the meaning.—

BEAUTY AND THE CHILD.
“People who are pleasing to
look at have no idea of thehipow-
er over the young mind. It is an
odd t.rait in the childs’ character
that while he will positively
adore an ugly, inanimate object,
such as a battered wooden doll
or the mere remnant of a horse,
lie will not forgive ugliness in a
human being. It seems to out-
rage his sense of fitness.”—
