Fix Em' Or Nix Em
by Jill Brinkley
Have you ever gone to the
Animal Control Shelter in
Abilene? Well it is a pitiful and
disturbing site. There are animals
destroyed on a daily basis and we
simply choose to ignore this inhu-
man act of cruelty and mistreat-
ment of animals.
In Abilene alone there are 40
to 60 animals destroyed on a daily
basis. This includes puppies kit-
tens large dogs and cats. Scotty
Mitchell supervisor of the animal
shelter here in Abilene says that
he has people walk in off the street
with litters of puppies and kittens
in a paper sack that are no more
than an hour old. These ignorant
people usually have some sly re-
mark like "Could you do some-
thing with these puppies I didn't
even know my dog was pregnant ! "
Now this is the type of men-
tality that we have to deal with.
Theshelteremployees and volun-
teers do not have the time nor the
funds to cater to the needs of a
newborn kitten or puppy so they
are immediately destroyed. They
are destroyed by injection usu-
ally because their lungs are not
developed enough to inhale
enough carbon monoxide to af-
fect them.
The carbon monoxide cham-
ber is the most common practice
used and the most economical.
There are other "old" practices
still used today such as electrocu-
tion or the unthinkable act of be-
ing taken out back and shot in the
head.
I was given permission by
Mitchell to witness the daily ritual
of the carbon monoxide cham-
ber. I have never witnessed such
a heartless or cruel act upon ani-
mals. There was a collie apoodle
mix and about a dozen kittens
whimpering and gasping for air.
They just stared at us with a look
of confusion and fright until they
had enough of the toxic fumes
and eventually suffocated. They
are then taken to the city dump for
disposal. I tell you after that
experience I wanted to take every
single one of those puppies and
kittens home with me.
How can we solve this prob-
lem? Well it is inevitable that we
cannot find homes for all of the
unwanted animals in the world.
But we am do something that can
help and maybe prevent this inhu-
mane and cruel treatment to our
furry and faithful friends.
First of all we all need to spay
and neuter our pets if we are not
going to breed for show or breed
as pure breeds. We need not only
a state law but a federal law to
prohibit the purchase of animals
unless they are spayed or neu-
tered. This will definitely crack
down on the numbers of unwanted
animals.
Think about it - who is always
there to greet you when you come
home? Noneotherthanmansmost
loyal of friends ANIMALS. Lets
try to do our part and save the
numbers of animals destroyed not
only in Abilene but everywhere.
