While very few of the members
thought of it or knew it yesterday
marked the eleventh anniversary
of the departure of Compauy M
for Austin, preparatory to enlist-
iug iu the regular army for the
war against Spain. It was a fine
bunch of young fellows that
boarded the train on that May day
eleven years ago, intent on defend-
ing their country. Company M,
from a bunch of raw recruits, soon
became famous in the 7th army
corps as the best drilled company
in the corps—not only the best
drilled but the best disciplined.
From Austin to Mobile, thence
to Miami, Fla., and from Miami to
Jacksonville, Fla., and from there
to Savannah, Ga., where they were
sent to Cuba. The company stayed
in Cuba about six months, and
were then sent back to Galveston,
where they were mustered out.
That company, originally con-
sisting of 106 men, is now scattered
to the four winds, as it were; some
of them are dead, and some of
them are dead broke; others have
made successes in life, but one and
all, wherever they art-, will always
look back to their army experience
as one of the pleasantest, and at
the same time hardest, experiences
in their lives.
Last night about 9:30 a hurry-
up call was sent from the T. & P.
dining hall for the priice. The
party who sent for the oflicers said
that some one was killing a woman
near the old granary west of the
ice factory. Officers Browning and
Bussell together with several oth-
ers headed for the place indicated.
About this tiihe a pistol shot or
two was heard in that direction.
The officers put on a full head of
steam, but when they got to the
spot nothing was to be seen. A lit-
tle investigation disclosed a pound
or two of hair, or a rat or some-
thing, but that was all. ’Nary a
corpse did they find; ’nary a drop
of blood, just hair—that was all,
save the silence and the aforesaid
granary.
The supposition is that a couple
of negroes, a man and a woman,
had gotten into a fight, fought it
out and then beat it when the
alarm was turned in. A negro man
living close to the scene declared
he saw the parties that engaged in
the row. This truthful narrator
first said it was a white man and
a woman, the man in his shirt
sleeves. Then he said it was a
negro with a light suit of clothes,
then said he couldn’t tell any-
thing about it, so the officers and
the crowd that followed let it go
at that and came to town. The
hair was left on the battle ground.

last night made a decided hit.
They do a monologue, a soug and

a most excellent voice, about the
best in fact that has been heard at
that place this seasou. The New-
mans arc good. The pictures last
night were better than usual, one
reel showing a lion hunt, in which
the lion was killed while making a
meal off of some other animal. It
was rather an exciting scene and
well worth seeing. This picture
will doubtless be shown at the free
exhibition this evening at 7:30.
