graduate and 40 graduate students according to the uni-
versity's registrar olfice

"This is the first year students are able to giaduate
with a minor in leadership" said Dr Craig Turner vice
president of academic affairs "The minoi began in IW2
as a vision of the president "
"He asked Dr. Michael Whitehorn and I to look at
other institutions which had the piogram We decided a
major was not in our best interests and so we created the
2 1 hour minor program" he said.
The purpose of the program is to "create a place to
tram Christian leaders in all fields tor the 2 1st centuiy."
According to Turner at least five students are graduating
with this minor.
Dr Turner said the class ol "97 is also unique
because it is the first to have students graduating with a
masters of divinity degree. Four graduate students have
completed Logsdon School of Theology's practical min-
istry program which is under the direction ol Dr Vernon
Davis professor of theology and director ol graduate the-
ological education
The undergraduate class presented Dr Lanny Hall
president ol HSU and the university with its gift this
morning The class decided to leave the university with a
showcase for the HSU cornerstone The gilt was paid lor
by fund raisers the class began as early as their Ireshman
year said senior class president Fhabeth Wagner She
said the class officers voted on the gift because the class
did not hold meetings as a whole and the idea original
ed with senior Duane Jobe.
"When I served on a freshman orientation steering
committee" said Jobe "I was in charge of the traditions
That's when I learned we had a cornerstone. I didn't even
know one existed."
Jobe said when he heard Wagner ask foi suggestions
for a class gift he thought it would be a good idea to have
a nice case lor the cornerstone "so people would know it
was there "
The cornerstone and the future location ol (Ik
showcase is in Moody Center below the Olson Medal
Plaque.
Jobe said the process of giving the gift which began
last November was not an easy one because "there was
a lot ol red tape " But the project showed him the malu
rity of his class
"When we were freshmen we weren't that involved
with 'permanent' things. I've watched leaders grow out
ol our class to take their places" he said. For instance
"this issue of the cornerstone we took the initiative to
get it done ourselves."
Wagner looked back on the past lour years and said
they had been the "best years" ol her hie
"I'm looking forward to what God has for us as we
take what we've learned at HSU out to our work places "
