A PLATFORM TO STAND ON
Cooper, Texas
peeding Driver
ause Accidents
Scout Troop 28
Has Wednesday Meet
“In recent years we have been
earing a lot about accident pre-
tention on our highways, and
‘■ave seen nucrou* plans put into
iffeet to prevent traffic acei-
ents,” said Capt. Harry Hutchi- ■
on. commanding officer of Dist. j
of the Texas Highway Patrol, i
ji a recent interview. “The lat- [
ist of these is used to promote
tafety, one basic fact must be
considered—safety on the high-
way can be accomplished only
^trough the 'peration f the
eople who use our roads. And
tafety will not be obtained until
he drivers and pedestrians obey
;he traffic laws, for in Texas a-
kout 90 percent of the wrecks
ire caused by violation I laws.
“We continue to hope th’t our
{drivers will voluntarily obey the
ji
Ithe lives of their families and
[themselves,” continued the Cap-
rtain. “However, since traffic law
[violation causes traffic accidents,
Lnd since some drivers will not
[obey the laws, the Highway Pa-
[trol in this district will make
[firm, vigorous enforcement of
the traffic laws their policy in
an effort to compel these drivers
[to obey the laws. As additional
[patrolmen are added in this area
[our activities will be increased.
|We hope our drivers will obey
the law of their own volition, but
if they do not they may expect
the Patrol to apprehend all of
the violators they possibly can.”
Concluded Capt. Hutchison, “If
you believe speeding drivers are
I not killers, you believe an ab-
surdity — they killed 1236 per-
sons on the rural highways of
Girl Scout Troop 28 met Wed-
nesday, January 8, at the ele-
mentary school with eight scouts
and two leaders, Mrs. J. It. Han-j
na and Mrs. T. J. Wheeler, pres-
ent.
During the business meeting
an election of officers was held,
The results were: president,
Margaret Scott; vice-president, j
Jill Wheeler, secretary, Barbara,
Gunter; and treasurer, Cyndia
Hanna.
The next meeting will be a i
I hike and the girls will carry a
| "nose bag” lunch. Hostesses will j
| be Jill Wheller and Margaret
I Scott.
The two service projects for
the next two weeks will be the
collection of western books for
the Veterans Hospital, and the
collection of one and a half yard |
long hair ribbons, rubber bands,
bobbypins, toys and clothing for
the Indian Orphanage at Hugo,
Okla. Mrs. J. R • Hanna has ask-
ed anyone who wished to con-1
tribute to the collections to con-
tact her.
Texas in 1955. If you believe
drinking drivers are not killers, j
you believe an absurdity — they ,
killed 737 persons that same year, j
If you believe violators of traf-
fic laws are not killers, you be-
lieve an absurdity — they killed
2165 persons on Texas streets
and roads in 1955. If you believe
an absurdity — prevention of
traffic law violations prevents
accidents. We intend to do all
| v.-e can to make the highways in
, this area safe for you. Save your

1 THE TRAFFIC LAWS. We need
your cooperation—join us in the
attack on traffic accidents.”
