CIRCUS HAS ITS TRAGEDIES
Edmond Wilson Qrltvws Over Badgered
Lis ns and Tlgnrs and Nsrvou.
Hippopotamus.
At the circus you saw beautiful
horses and beautiful human beings
—which is much. For the rest, I
dou’t mind having dogs and seals
and even elephants trained to do
(ricks, but I do object to sulky lions
and tigers, badgered into jumping
over each other. Lions and tigers,
like domestic cats, have no feeliug
for human games; they oannot enter
into the spirit of Die thing. Where
a seal will dance about on a spring-
board and bark eagerly for fish, a
tiger has to be driven with a whip
and a revolver fired off in its face;
they never look anything but bored
and morose and anxious to eat the
tamer.
I also saw a red-eyed hippopota-
mus in a cage only twice its length
and in which I supposed he had
been hauled from Cincinnati. He
gazed wildly from his meager bath
with tho frightened innoc«rce of
tows in cattle trains, aud when ono
vf the hands slammed a trunk be-
hind him he started like a nervous
woman. 1 pity this hippopotamus
and wish he were back in his uative
swamp.—Kdrnoad Wilson in the
Dial.
MISERS AND THEIR MILLIONS
—
Ta Be Thrifty Is Not to Be Mlsorly— ,
Thrift Is Only lnt.lllg.nt
Bpendl.g.
Thrift, ns some very wise man has
said, menus only intelligent spend-
ing. Some people try to make it
appear that to U thrifty is to bo j
miserly, but it is easy to see tbnt if
we develop a race of misers who
boarded their savings, there could
be nothing of prosperity or happi-
ness bore. Misers are never happy
and they are never prosperous. They
may have millions, but if they do
not spend intelligently—and in
some cases it has been shown that
they will not spend at all—their
money ia about aa worthless aa so
many rooks.
The economic structure in this
country is based upon the earnings
aud spending of currency. Thrift
has its part to plsy in all this sort
of thing, but thoae who canuot sec
tile difference between intelligent
spending and hoarding grow older
without growing wiser. Thrift,
properly exercised, is ono of the
most important factors in the life of
any city, state or nation. Thrifty
people—real people of thrift, that
is—arc the safeguards of tho repub-
lic, Misers never help themselves
nor snyoue else. Furthermore, they
do not dosire to be of holp to any-
one. .
The thrifty man and woman secs
the mutual advantage of service, lie
suves a part of what he earns, but he
doesn’t attempt to savo all of it at
the expense of bis own happiness
and the progress of his municipality,
commonwealth or country.—Dayton

Fire Damp Makes New Protective De-
vice Emit 03rill Warnings Against
Deadly Menace.
Miners fear fire damp probably
more than any other menace of their
calling. Its presence lends to ex-
plosions, breathing it is dangerous
and ita approach ia so insidious that
the damage may be done before H ia
discovered. Safety lamps have beret
in common use for many ycare (e
prevent fire-damp explosions, the fa-
mous Davies lump being the one
beat known. Now cornea an im-
provement on the Davies lamp and
also the invention of a Briton.
This new lamp not only is a safety
lump from the explosive side of min-
ing and a real illnminating lamp, but
it is also a fire-damp protector. Ita
pc ini liar frame resembles a bunch of
tuning forks and they are made so
sensitive that the presence of even so
small an amount of fire damp in the
air a* 3 per cotit will cause the lamp
to sing, or vibrate a musical note.
As the fire damp incrcasea in the
air, the lamp sings more loudly and
more shrilly, affording ample warn-
ing to the underground worker of
the deadly menace.
THE DRUG STORE DOCTOR
The fussy dentist waa examin-
ing the teeth of his patient and as-
sumed an air of great wisdom.
"Do you ever dean your teeth f”
he inquired, as he pried and poked.
“Yes,” replied the patient.
“How many times a day?” pur-
sued the dentist
‘Twice,” waa the answer.
"Have you had any ad vies before
with regard to your teeth f”
“Yes, I called on a druggist last
night.”
“And what foolish adrieo did he
give you ?”
Tho exasperated patient ex-
claimed desperately:
"Ila told me to come to you.”
TAKE YOUR TURNI
The elevator boy waa evidently
green at the job. Two passengers,
a man and a woman, got on at the
street floor.
"Ninth,” said the latter once they
were fairly started.
“Sixth,” said the man.
The car sped by tho sixth floor
and stopped at the ninth. On the
way back the insu said: "Why in
thunder didn’t you stop at the sixth
floor? The sixth is lower than the!
ninth.” I
“I know that,” said the elevator!
boy, "but the woman said ‘ninth’
firet.”—Boston Transcript.
NOT BO FRAIL
"Men are frail mortal*, art they
not?” said counsel.
“Speak for yourself,” waa ths in-
dignant reply. "My husband weighs
stone!”—London Tit-Bit*, t
