Hay Cut in Afternoon
Said to Cure Fasici
It makes a vast difference in the
time required for curing hay
whether it is cut in the morning or
afternoon, according to the Path-
finder Magazine. I)r. A. I,. Blukke,
plant physiologist of Iowa, says
there may be a difference of 40
per cent in the moisture content
of plants betwecu 10:30 a. m. and
1:30 p. m.
Doctor Blnkke has measured the
content of water in plants at vari-
ous hours of the day and found
plants contain least water about
1 :30 p. m. They contain the most
water from early morning until
about 10:30 because the leaf pore3
are practically closed during the
night while tlie roots are taking up
moisture. As a result the cells are
filled with water in the early morn-
ing. Soon after sunrise ttie leaf
pores open up and start to throw
off moisture.
As soon as plants are rut off the
leaf pores close and if they are rut
when containing the most water the
curing is bound to be less rapid. The
time of day far cutting hay seems
important in view of these findings,
especially for alfalfa and sweet
clover.
productivity of the mint has in-
creased to such an extent that the
whole order was carried out in a
few days. The Leningrad mint is
now able to issue 1,800,000 coins
daily. Up to April It, 126,500,000
rubles’ worth of small silver coins
tiad been minted, including the
order for 20,000,000 rubles’ worth
executed in London. One hundred
million rubles’ worth of copper has
already been put into circulation.
Seven million rubles’ worth of cop-
per had been minted by the same
date, of which 4,000,000 rubles is
in circulation. The amount of paper
currency of small denomination had
decreased on April 11 from 27.000,-
000 to 17,000,000 rubles. In view
of the bulk and general inconven-
ience of copper coinage, the com-
missariat of finuiice proposes to is-
sue a new coinage of five, tlirce and
two kopek values, composed of an
alloy of bronze and other metals.
The Leningrad mint has keen in-
structed to prepare various samples

bling the skirt of a dancer. They are
the result of age-long process of
breeding and selection. American ex-
perimenters working along the same
line, but with a view to utility
rather than ornament, have success-
fully mated brook trout with rain-
bow trout, and steel-head trout with
the Dolly Varden variety. Lake fish
were made the next subjects and
wliitefish were crossed with fresh-
water herring. Now attempts are be-
ing mude to produce a cross between
certain sea fish, such as the cod and
the haddock. The shad has a great
reputation as a food fiph in America,
but is as bony as the herring. Shad
were therefore crossed with the
striped bass, and the young ffsh have
been successfully hutched and lib-
erated in the sea. Whether they will
survive and multiply is still a prob-
lem, for cross-bred creatures of all
sorts seldom reproduce their kind.

At State Hill, nenr Middletown,

meeting is held but once n year.
The church, the Old School Bap-

by death and removals that services
oftener than once every twelve

its members.

An amusing story at the expense
of a food faddist is related by Ralph
'Neville, an English writer:
When at luncheon with a friend

consumption. Later on,” says Mr.
I Neville, “I inquired of his wife if
this new diet agreed with her hus-
, band.
I “ ‘It didn’t at first/ she replied,
‘but it docs now.’

seems to thrive on it. He never
looked more robust in his life/

Italy's Taxless Houses
The Italian cabinet lias approved
a deerce prolonging through 1928
the regulation granting exemption
from taxation on dwelling houses,
hotels, stores and offices for a period
of twenty-five years from their com-
pletion. The exemption originally
extended only to buildings com-
pleted before the end of 1926. The
regulation has been m
ever, to the effect that houses com-
menced after August 25 must pay
one-fifteenth of the normal tax in
1927, increasing by the same amount
each year until the full tax becomes
operative after 1940.—Commerce
