SOME EDITORIAL COMMENT.
Our neighboring town of Fal*
furrias shipped the first ear of
watermelons thi* season. Those
Kalfurrigs tire an enterprising
lot and set an example worthy of
emulation by the Hebbronvil-
liana.
Mr. ('has. W. Itellen, with bis
family is in Mineral Wells recu-
perating, while Mr. Henry Edds
is in San Antonio at Santa Rosa
Hospital recovering fr<»m an ope-
ration. Moth are among Hebbron
villes best citizens and both are
missed when they are away from
home.
No matter what those Mexican
officials and others inay say, the
fact remains that Mr. Velasco
was kidnapped in Tampico by
armed men claiming to repres-
ent the Attorney (tenoral's De-
partment at Mexico City, for-
cibly brought to Nuevo Laredo
and forcibly put across the In-
ternational bridge to the Amer-
ican side.

Arthur Brewer, an American
citizen, was killed in his oflice
in Guadalajara, Mexico, by a
Mexican to whom he had refused
to hand over a large sum of
money which the Mexican had
demanded of him. The United
State* has asked that the mur-
derer be puuished but the chances
are be will lie promoted instead,
which has been tile custom in
Mexico since Porfirio Diaz went
out of power. And especially does
the custom prevail if a Mex-
ican kill* an American on this
side of the Rio Grande and
escapes to Mexico. He at once
becomes a hero and is given a
commission in the army, and
that’s the way Calles and his
Bolshevist followers love the
United States.

Several days ago Mr. Calles
declared a boycott on oil pro-
duct* manufactured in the United
States. A few days later he took
it all back saving his intentions
had been misunderstood. The
uews of both incident* came from
Mexico City in Associated Press
dispatches, and us Mr. Calles
dictates all news items coming
out of Mexico City, it is presum-
ed that both messages to the
American people had the Presi-
dential sanction. However, the
boycott message failed to create
the desired effeet. ami discov-
ering that he was cutting off
his nose to spite his face, he
took it all back in his message
number two. Mr. Calles. it seems,
is given to spoils of brainstorm.

American calls Calles “the Aztec
President.” There ia none of the
Aztec in Mr. Calles. His father
was an Assyrian and his mother
a Yaqui Indian, and the Yaquis
would disdain to claim descent
from the Aztecs and the Assy-
rians can’t. But Calles is more
Turk than anything alse and
liis nature and characteristics ai^e
altogether that way.
If it is true as reported, that
Mrs. Marshall Hicks really has
a Senatorial bee in her bonnet,
then those male candidates who
are busy talking to the people,
liad just as well understand that
women have political rights that
must lie respected. And why
should’t Texas have a woman
in the United States Senate,
since the women have done and
are doing so much for Texas!
We do not agree with Gov-
ernor Moody on his civil service
proposition. We believe with
Andrew Jackson that to the vic-
tor belongs the sopils, and we
also believe that changes with
each Administration are best for
the country. As Marsshall Hicks
puts it, what may be lost in ef-
ficiency, if such a thing is pos-
sible, is more than made up in
loyAlty to the party in power,
and that is something worth
while.

It goes without saying that
Mr. Buckley soon, got in touch
with Washington City, with the
result that the State Department
aeting through Consul Walsh in
Nuevo I^redo, ordered Senor
Velasco released under $1,000.00
bond, with permission to remain
in the United States six months.
When Velasco was kidnapped in
Tampico, through Standard Oil
mouey aeeouling t() the New
York Times, he was not permited
to communicate with his wife or
get his passport, and the greatest
wonder is that he was not put
out of the way instead of being
brought to Nuevo Laredo and
shoved to the American side.

When Mussolini came into
power there were many Russian
Bolshevist* in Italy making con-
verts and causing trouble. One of
Mussolinis first official acts was
to issue an order stating that
after a certain date each Bolshe-
vist caught in Italy should be
gven a half pint of castor oil-
The result was that the foreign
Bolshevist* speedily left the
country while the Italians they
had converted to Bolshevism
became Fascist*. We have a
few Bolshevists in the United
States in high offieal places that
ought to be given a dose of
Mussolini’s remedy.

enter Mexico. And thus is Consul
Vasquez deprived of the duty of
compiling for the Laredo Time*
those wonderful reports which
he turned out with such seeming
regularity showing the great
volume of exports this country
was making monthly to Mexico,

ferred to Laredo on a change of
venue, was tried in the district
court in that city Monday. He
plead guitly to one charge and
was given three years in the
penitentiary, the other charge
against him being dismissed.
Several of Hebbronville’s best
citizens attended the trial as
character witnesses for the de-
fendant. His attorney was Coun-
ty Attorney R. R. Mullen, who
secured the assistance of his
father, Judge R. R. Mullen, and
Judge L. Broeter, both of whom
are prominent Alice lawyers, anti

Editor Jeff: MeLeniore of the
Hebbronville News is in the spot-
light. His newspaper has carried
editorials antagonistic to the pro-
gram of President Calles of Mex-
ico. Editor McLemore lived for
years in Mexico. This criticism
did not appeal to the Aztec Pre-
sident and now the Texas editor
has been given warning to re-
main on the Texas side of the Rio
Grande River. He will heed the
warning. He will remain on the
water wagon. He will continue
his criticisms. Freedom of the
press is dead in Italy. It is dead
in Mexico Freedom of expression
is dead in Mexico. Italy has a
dictator; Mexico has a dictator.
