The Simmons University Cam-
pus was somewhat deserted dur-
ing the three day holiday period
the post week with most of tho
students taking advantage of the ;
lull in school activities to make
a short visit with the home folks.

two weeks ago according to Dr.
D. M. Wiggins dean of students

Dr. Flynn attending surgeon
stated that the president was do-
ing as well as could be expected
with the possibility that ho will
be able to return to Abilene in a
short time.
Dr. Sandefcr sent greetings to
all new members of the faculty
and student body expressing tho

Baxter Polk Assists
In County's Library

Baxter Polk assistant librarian
and student in Simmons univer-
sity is aiding Miss Madge Stan-
ford county supervisor in cata-
loguing tho books in tho county
library. Tho library is located
in the county court house and
is for rural schools of tho county.
It has been organized since last
fall for the furpose of furnishing
material for tho rural schools
Tho library now contains about
i 400 volumes dealing with fiction
literature history and biogra-
phy.. Tho books were obtained
through donations und through
u foe the vurious rural schools in
th0 county pay. Tho plan is to
start files of tho current nowspa
pors and magazines in tho near
future. According to Mr. Wil-
liams county superintendent
and Miss Stanford tlioy expect
to doublo tho number of volumes
within tho next year through do-
nations and purchases.
She will leave for Hollywood at
an earl) date. All expenses of
the trip and stay in the film city
are to be paid by ihe producers
Quartet Will Open
Tour Early Sunday
The Simmons University Cow-
boy Quartet is to leave early to-
morrow morning on their tour of
the mid-western states which will
include Texas Arkansas Mis-
souri Oklahoma and Illinois.
The men are to be gone until
August 18 with their principal
concert to he given at the Cen-
tury of Progress Exposition in
Chicago. The are also to appear
in somo of the largest Baptist'
churches in the country. Thirty
two church engagements are on
tlu schedule. Other dates will
probably be added.
The ipuu tet is composed of Kn-
ell Porter Bernard Richards
Pete Shaw and Tyler Cagle.

Former Trustee's Wife
Buried Thursday
Mrs. U. Collins former resi-
dent of this city who died Wed-
nesday at Alamo wus buried here
Friday afternoon. Kites were held
from the University Baptist
church ut 3:30 o'clock with Hev.
Charles A. Powell officiating.
Besides her husband who was
for many years u trustee of Sim-
mons university she is survived
by six children: Ralph noli ami
Strickland and Miss Ida Maeeta i

Weather conditions in Abilene
during the past week have caused
Simmons students to seek relief
by taking dips in the swimming
pool and gorging themselves
with cold drinks.
All previous continuous heat
records hue failed to survive the
present wave which has not been
broken except for a light shower
Thursday for 10 or 12 days. Tlie
mercury has hovered around the
100 mark throughout the spell

Cornet Trio Is Feature of
Program; 3 More to
Be Given j
The Simmons University Sum-j
mcr Bund School gave a program I
Friday evening at 8:00 p. m. on
tho Federal lawn.
This was the first of three con-
certs to be given down town by
the band in the next three weeks.
The next program will be given
at 8:00 Tuesday evening July 18
at the federal lawn. Another
program will follow later "In the
week.
The band consists of fifty in-
struments with band directors
from various schools over the
country also In tho band. Speci-
al numbers wero rendered by
the cornet trio of Mr. Betts Car-
ter Pierce and Raymond O'Bryan
The program of July 18 will bo
unusual in that each number
will be directed by a different
director. These directors are in
tho summer band school and in
the long terms have charge of
different bonds over the country.
The program for Friday eve-
ning was under the direction of
Professor I). O. Wiley who is director-
of the .summer band
school. The program rendered
was as follows;

Enrollment Hike
Miss Mary E. Head dean of
women this week received a
letter from Miss Alum Williams
of Gallup New Mexico who was
a student in Simmons last year
which states that she is already
ready to come back after being
at home only a month.
Miss Head said that she Is
daily receiving such letters which
testify to the fact that next year's
enrollment will probably exceed
that of the proceeding year by
a largo number. Practically all
of the last years students are
expected to return with advance
reports indicating that this
year's froshman class will be
ono of tho largest in tho history
of tho school

Sweeheart Race
All Petitions Must Be In
Brand Office By
Thursday
Plans fpr the annual summer
"Sweetheart" race arc completed
with friends of candidates cir-
culating petitions this week hi
order to get their favorites on
the ticket.
All petitions must contain the
name of the proposed candidate
with the signatures of at least
25 members of the studont body.
All petitions must be turned In to
the Brand office not later than
l:.'tO o'clock next Thursday after-
noon. All coming in later than
this time will not ho considered.
Time and place of voting will
be specified In next weeks issue
of the Brand. Any girl whether
married or single is eligible for
the contest.
Students will propably notice
that the winner is to be designat-
ed as "Sweetheart" this summer
rather ' than "Queen" ( This
change was made ut the request
of several leaders who thought
that the now name would better
suit the victor as well us being
novel to the student assembly.
The title "Queen" also coincided
with that of the winner of the
regular term contest and was
somewhat confusing to outsiders
as well as students.
Last years contest was won by
Miss Mildred Richeson of Man-
kins who is not in school this
term. Beauty poise personality
and popularity arc to bo consider-
ed in choosing the "Sweetheart".
Former Student Dies
In Paducah Hospital
I.eMic Carr Puducah youth
who attended Simmons in 10241-
.'!() and accompanied the Cowboy
Baud t Europe died June 20
in the Puilucah hospital. Carr's
death was the result of an appou-
dix operation and heart compli-
cations. Carr is survived by his mother
nnd one brother Cecil both of
Paducah. Carroll Robertson

Hollis Sunshine Parker Leslie
Seviut and Ralph Goodiu all
former classmates of the deceas-
ed were pallbearers.

Edgar. Ingerson graduate with

Simmons at the annual Paisano
Baptist Encampment to bo hold

nnd women of that section of tho
state about Simmons university.
