District Court.
The January term of the eighth
judicial district court convened last
Monday, with Judge R. L. Porter on
the bench. This is Judge Porter's
first term of the Cooper court since
his election, but he is demonstrating
to his friends and the people geuer-
ally that they made a wise selection
when they elected him. He is in
fact an ideal judge—one, as it were,
who is “to the manner born.’’
Hon. Tom Gardner is performing
his duties as district clerk like an
old stager, and is proving himself to
be a capable and efficient officer.
District Attorney Sam D. Stinson
and County Attorney I. B. Lane are
diligently and efficiently looking alter
the welfare of the grand jnry, and
Sheritf Turbeville and his splendid
oorps of deputies are kept busy at-
tending to the wants oi the court,
the lawyers and litigants.
The hrst work of the court was to
empanel and install the following as
grand jurors; J. L. Kill'll, J. U
Berry, H. A. Nabors. W. H. Dingier,
W. L. Oats, G. G. Robertson, U.
Anderson, E. W. Pickard, R.
Hindman, J. M. McClain, Jai
Riggs, W. E. Skeen
Judge Porter delivered tbe cus-
tomary statutory charge to the grand
jurors, calling their attention espe-
cially to the law against gambling
1 and violations of the local option
law. He complimented the people ^
of Delta county on the fact that there
ia only one murder case on the docket
of this court, and that was brought
here from another district on change
of venue. The Jwdge also said tbe
same condition exists in Hunt county,
and the only murder case on the
docket of Hopkins county is that of
a little deat and dumb boy who
killed his mother.
J L. Ratliff was selected aB fore- ]
man of the grand jury, and Rev. J.
H Morgan was appointed door keep-
er f0r that body. The following con-
