and augmenting of the local tribe.
Deputy Sachem Charett was hap-
pily accompanied by Sachem Sed-
gwick of the Galveston tribe, one of
the ablest and brightest Red Men
in tne state. The charter of the
tribe was reopened by Deputy Sach-
em Charett, and the names of 98
well known and esteemed palefaces
were added to the already large roll
of honor. Red Men seek none but
men of good character and integrity
and tney appear to get them. Last
Friday evening the working team ot
Commerce tribe nnmbe. some 25
big chiefs came in, and in the pres-

According to statistics issued by
tbe department of commerce ot the
census bureau, the number of bales
of cottou ginned in Delta county
during the past season are: Square
bales 14253, rouud bales 4797, mak-
mg a total of 16901 squivoleut 500
pound bales, against 26256 of the
year before or 36358 of the year
J900 the largest vear on record.
The fact that last years crop was in
round numbers 20000 hales short of
the year 1900 is really more signi-
ficant than one would ordinarily sup-
ple. At an average of $50 per
b vle this shortage will represent the
immense sum ol $1,000,000, an
average of $60 for every man, wo-
man and child in Delta ccuuty.
This loss has been largely compen.
sated by an excellent corn and forage
crop, which has relieved the farmers
of what has hitherto been their great-
est expenditure. At the same time
banks and credit houses have not
been called on for advances ordinarily
xpected while the deposits of the
firming class will compare favorably
with other years. These conditions
being such, the gathering of only a
moderate crop of hay, corn and cot-
ton will insure a prosperous year to
farmer and business man alike.
the work. After all
business was Nfcer, Judge Cooper was
called on aij^nuade a brief talk and
among other things stated that the
order was growing with marvelous
rapidity, there now being 400,006 iu
the United States, and 12.000 in
Texas. Then came refreshment^
and at a late hour the tribe adjourn-
ed greatly enthused with the magni-
ficent prospect ahead. It is proba-
ble that the Red Men are .numerical-
ly the strongest in the county, and
number many of our most respected
and mtluential citizeus. Sachem
Sedgwick will remain to organize
and instruct a local working team,
and much enthusiasm prevails.
Many distinguished men of Texas
and the U. S. belong to this beauti-
ful order.
