Walter Stevenson of Sulphur Bluff Killed In-
stantly Sunday Night; Examining Trial Set
For Wednesday Afternoon.
Walter Stevenson, 56, was killed at Kensing, 17 miles east
of here, Sunday night about 10 o’clock. A charge of No. 4
shot from a shotgun struck him just above the (heart and
death was instantaneous. Stevenson had been a resident of
Sulphur Bluff for many years. _
Beckhem Buster, about 35, was
arrested by Sheriff C. F. Patter-
son, Deputy L. B. Carrell and Con-
stable Jim Watkins who investi-
gated the case and is being held
in the Delta County jail. Charges
of murder were filed against him
Monday morning. A coroner's in-
quest was held Sunday night by
Robert Morris.
In a statement made to County
Attorney W. H. C-unk Monday
morning, Buster gave a detailed
account of the tragedy. He stat-
ed that he had been living away
from his home for two weeks but
that Sunday night he heard Stev-
1 enson’s voice and went close to the
house to hear what was happen-
i ing. iA little later, he said, he io-
ticed Stevenson crawling toward
him and feared for his own safe-
| ty, as Stevenson had threatened
1 him on several occasions. The
: shotgun was fired from a distance
i of about 19 paces. Buster said,

The trend of relief in Texas dur-
ing March toward a lower case
load and lower costs is borne out
by records of the Delta County
Board of Welfare and Employ-
ment which show a decline of 75
cases for the month just past.
Many clients have been able to
secure employment on farms while
others have been given jobs here.
This increase in employment op-
portunities is expected to further
decrease the case load by about
50 case for April.
The eight metropolitan counties-
of the state, Bexar, Dallas, El
Paso, Galvfston, Harris, Jefferson
Tarrant, and Travis, report a com-
bined decrease of 2,353 cases as
compared to the February total.
The percentage of reduction in
Delta County is much greater than
the above counties because of the
smaller case load existing.
