HOUSEHOLD TIMERS -
From calibrating baking time
to turning on a lamp, household
timers offer numerous uses.
They time cooking, games, sun
lamps, telephone calls and laun-
dry, just to name a few activit-
ies. When purchasing atimerof
any kind, consider these quest-
ions: - W hat activities will be
timed with the device? - Where
will the timer be used most? If
used near a hot range, it should
be heat resistant.
Is the alarm loud enough to
be heard if no one is close by?
Is the time simple to set?
Are markings easy to read?
Does it have at least one
year’s guarantee?
Timers vary from single
units to parts of large appli-

ances--as simple as an hair

timing mechanism in a washing
machine.
Small single units—about the
size of a travel alarm clock-
move from one place to another
to time activities.
Other portable ones attach to
larger appliances--and turn
them off or on.
For example, the sleep sw itch
in a radio or tv shuts it off
after a set time. Or it can be
reversed—as an alarm allow-
ing the user up to 60 minutes
nap time.
Another single unit timer
turns on the automatic coffee-
maker—so coffee will perk be-
fore the family arises. Timers
also discourage burglars by
causing regularly used lights
or appliances to come on or
go off when desired - even w ith
the family away. Some cooking
ranges have built-in timers,
either as part of the range
clock or a separate stove-top
control. Washers, dryers and
dishwashers also use built-in
timing mechanisms to control
cycles. One of the simplest
timers consists of a manual,
spring-waind clock that trig-
gers an .alarm w' oi “time is
up.” In general, timers are
accurate ot 15 seconds on any
setting—although an error of 30

seconds is accurate enough for
many tasks.
Most measure up to 60 min-
utes in one setting, and are
numbered at every fifth min-
ute. The newest style consist of
a digital clock. With it, num-
bers of the exact hair and
minute appear horizontally ai
the timer face.
Let s lay this question
to rest once and for all.

We re taking major
steps to make sure
you have gas for
the future New gas were buying
costs more than four times the price
we paid just a few years ago This is
an astonishing amount of money1
But it's the price all of us must pay
for a continuing supply of natural
gas energy.
This winter, and in the future,
natural gas from Lone Star will con-
tinue to be your best method of
home heating, water heating and
cooking just as it has been for
more than 40 years. But we all must
remember to help conserve this pre-
cious energy fuel.
