Mrs. Gwen Pickering, R. N.,
Northeast Texas Area Program
Board Member with the Amer-
ican Lung Association of Texas,
said the American Lung Asso-
ciation is using a Hey man photo-
graph as the pictorial theme for
the 1973 Christmas Seal cam-
paign. Hey man said his picture
shows the “love and trust young
people have for the older gen-
eration and the responsibility
we have to children — to care
for them and keep them
healthy”.
Keeping young lungs healthy is
a major concern of the lung
association. One way Christmas

Seal contributions are put to
work is to teach young people
the dangers of cigarette smok-
ing. ‘‘The idea”, says Mrs.
Pickering, “is to reach young-
sters before they’re hooked”.
I ilms and brochures designed
especially to explain the effects
of smoking to young audiences
and a booklet tohelphigh school

to help their friends -- and
their parents and teachers --
kick the habit are available
from local lung associations.
Other associations have spon-
sored seminars for helping tea-
chers and school nurses quit
smoking so they will set a
healthy example for students.
Workshops have been held for
educators to stimulate pilot
smoking and health programs
in area schools.
“Despite these efforts, close
to a million teenagers will be-
gin smoking in 1974”, Mrs.
Pickering said. “For each of
these children, the risk of em-
phy sema or other crippling lung
disease increases with each
cigarette. We must help them
to cpjit as well as to reduce the
number of new smokers. As
you live and breathe, give more
to the Christmas Seal fight
against smoking.”
