TOON’S NURSERY
In the past electric utility
companies, both privately own-
id and cooperatives, had as
their primary function the con-
struction of new lines and to
serve patrons with electrical
current With the changes in
t me, society and economy, these
companies hi ve added various
assistance programs to their
initial function.
In more recent times electric
utility companies have noted
the benefit of the economic
status in their respective service
alias and have led other utility
companies in providing needl'd
or additional services to their
patrons.
Many stockholder-e 1 e c t r i c
companies have entire depart-
ments working with communi-
ties and farm agencies in de-
veloping community improve-
ment programs and better farm-
ing systems.
Cooperatives have led in pro-
viding assistance to the rural
areas which they serve, and
Farmers Electric Cooperative,
Inc. is such a company.
Joe Lytle, manager of FEC
stated this week, “we know our
economy and s'Kietv are con-
tinually changing. Now, almost
all of our farms and ranches
have the benefits of electric
power, but the needs of the
rural people are continually
i hanging. The farms aim increas-
ing in size while the farm popu-
lation is decreasing in number.
To help head off this approach-
ing shortage in trained person-
nel on the farm' , we began pro-
viding all tin as-i tar.ci possible
to such clubs as 4-H, FFA,
Young Farmers and Young
Homemakers, an 1 many moore.
Our primary function is still
erving the rurai areas with
electricity. However, if we can
help in a small way to give this
generation of tomorrow’s farm-
ers the benefits of our experi-
ence and knowledge of electri-
city and rural growth, our ef-
forts will be repayed a thous-
and-fold.”
Farmers Electric, now serving
an eleven county sendee terri-
tory and maintaining more than
2300 miles of electricial distribu-
tion lines, incluo’ing 90 miles in
Delta County, was organized by
a small group of farmers in
Rockwail County near the small
town of Heath in 1937. These
men, according to Lytle, banded
together to form an electric co-
operative so they could receive
electric energy on a reliable
basis at reasonable rates, which
had not been available in the
past.
