GOEBEL TEMPLETON
Since the advertisement of my
worthy opponent in last week’s
paper I want to make these state-
ments. I think I should, in fair-
ness to myself, my County, and
my opponent.
I like him, like him very much,
and his entire family.
His condition is unfortunate,
very unfortunate, but he has
been able to teach twenty-five
years in Texas, none in this
County as far as I know. On ac-
count of consideration of Texans
and Delta Countians for such
conditions, our Teacher Retire-
ment Program affords him a
splendid income the rest of his
life, or until he gets well, which
we hope and pray he does. We
are all happy, extremely happy
over such a program. This pro-
gram is explained on page 20,
section 6, under Disability Bene-
fits of the book, “Your Teacher
Retirement.’’ It is in your County
Superintendent’s office. You are
welcome to come and read it, if
you like. It will be a professional
duty as well as a personal pleas-
ure to show it to you.
Since therefore, my opponent
has no dependents, has a good
car-wash station, and is afforded
Teacher Retirement for life, I
doubt if he needs the job more
than I do. I lack a little in age
and service for retirement with-
out penalty.
One cannot draw a retirement
and a salary also from the State.
Under the law one or the other
must be sacrificed.
I also doubt the advisability
of my opponent’s working at any
job, even from the standpoint of
his health and life, to say noth-
ing of his challenging handicap
in the discharge of the duties and
work incumbent in the office.
But the enhancement of my-
self or opponent in this race
should not be the main considera-
tion in your selection of a County
Superintendent. Rather the gen-
eral educational welfare of our
precious children, plus thfe over-
all good of our great County. My
opponent or Goebel, as to that
matter, no doubt, either one or
both I venture to say could live
without it.
On these basis, I solicit your
vote and influence for County
School Superintendent of our
County in the coming Primary
Election May 7.
I am trying to visit every Delta
County family and individual
during the campaign. Am a little
busy in the office this time of
year and may be a little late in
such a program, but I’ll be there.
But if I should miss you, may
I use this littl’e article as both
my personal visit and political
solicitation with you..
Sincerely,
Goebel Templeton
PS: This is the nicest and most
Christian way I know to express
the facts and my feelings in this
case and race.
