On June 1, 1913 he married
Miss Virgie Viola Strickland
of the Etter Lake Community.
The ceremony took place in
Greenville, with Hunt County
Justice of the Peace J. P. Al-
bert officiating. She was born
on Feb. 21, 1895 in the Etter
Lake Community, daughter of
Pleas Downs Strickland and
Mary Lee Leona Strickland.
She recalls that her father ha-
uled lumber from Louisiana
when the Community school
was built.
TEN YEARS AGO
Judge Newman Phillips, 81,
died unexpectedly at his home
in Cooper last Sunday. Funeral
services were held Monday at
3 p.m. at First Methodist
Church with the pastor. Rev.
James Simpson Jr., officating.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were
the parents of four children,
three of whom are living, in-
cluding Melba, now Mrs. W.
E. Beard of Greenville, Melvin
Johnson of Bailey, Texas, and
Bobby Johnson of Dallas. They
now have 14 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
The marriage of Miss Dean-
na Carter, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd Carter, to Glenn
Marshall Landers, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Herman Landers,
Cooper. Route 3, was perform-
ed Friday, October 7, in the
parsonage of the First Presby-
terian Church at Durant, Okla.

350 E. Waco in Cooper, are na-
tive Texans, and have spent
all of their lives in Texas with
the exception of three years
residence in Oklahoma.

Josephine (Surface) Johnson.
Claud Curtis Johnson was born
on Aug. 6, 1894 in the Etter
Lake Community of Hunt Co-
unty eight miles southeast of
Greenville, now known as Maj-
ors Field. As a boy he attended
the Etter Lake Community
Until his retirement several
years ago Mr. Johnson was a
farmer, and he and his wife liv-
ed and farmed in the Ladonia,
Cumby, Caddo Mills and Pecan
Gap areas. His health failed
three years ago and he and his
wife moved to Cooper to be
near his doctor. Mrs. Johnson
does all of her housework and
also sews for the public.
FFA officers elected for the
Cooper chapter for the coming
year include Curtis Walker,
president; Doyce Nance, vice-
president; Joe Black, tieasur
er; Ralph Vaughn, secretary;
Jerald Boles, reporter; Billy
Harris, sentinel.
M. Lucks, Cooper merchant,
was found dead in the South-
land Hotel at Dallas, Wednes-
day.
Mrs. Mary Ann Moore, 86,
died at the family, home near
Amy Sunday. She had been a
resident of the county since
1887.
Cooper defeated the Com-
merce Training School in a
football game Friday, with
Harry Turner starting for the
local team.
