The Modem Fanner
The modern fnrmer is turning
his attention to a study of the
soil to ascertain its adaptability
to the production ofeertain crops
and its ability to withstand
drouths and chemical changes.1
They ure beginning to realize the
importance of soil knowledge as
well as knowledge of crop care.
Along with the study of soils
the modern farmer is devoting
his thoughts to soil preserva-
tion—the preservation ofits nat-
ural fertdity—and the storing of
moisture to carry his crops
through the growing season. He
realizes that our climate it erratic
and that he can not always de-
pend upon rain just when it is
most needed. To make up for
the deficiency of precipitation
during the growing season the
modern farmer is learning to so
treat the soil as to mantain a
portion of its moisture stored
during the winter months* There
is an art in this, but he h a s
mastered the secret and is large-
ly increasing his yield thereby.
The Boys’ Corn clubs have de-
monstrated the efficacy of the
new cultural methods and the
older larmers have learned a
valuable lesson from the boy.
This fulfills the prophecy that "a
child shall lead them."
. J. W. Neill, director of farmers’
institutes, is making a progress-'
ive campaign in liehalf of this
new agriculture which has revo-
lutionized thought on the pos-
sibilities of preserving soil mois-
ture. Some people call this the
Campbell system of culture, but
Mr. Neill goes further than Mr.
Campbell especially in the first
preparation of the soil and the
new bed.
With the wonderful changes in
our system of agriculture none is
more potent for good than the
system which preserves the soil
moisture to be drawn upon to
mature the growing crop in sea-
son of drouth. Under this sys-
tem of soil
Best of attention to all.
