early in the season for live-
stock producers throughout
all of Texas to be alert for
evidence of the pest.
In most years, livestock
producers in Liberty Coun-
ty do not experience screw-
worm infestations until late
spring; however, the March
discovery points up that
stockmen already need to be
watching for screwworms,
eradication officials stated.
Authorities noted that be-
cause the infestation near
Liberty was detected during
the early stages of the mag-
gots’ development and was
reported promptly to eradi-
cation j-eadquarters at. Mis-
sion, It was ‘ possible to
quickly implement emer-
gency measures to prevent
the spread of scTewworms
to other areas. Sexually
steriJe screwworm flies were
being dispersed on and near
the infested premises with-
in 48 hours after the case
was discovered in the
wound mt a goet.

CHECK, DOUBLE-CHECK
INCOME TAX RETURNS
Every years there’s a de-
crease in the number of er-
rors discovered in federal
income tax returns, Allison
B. Clark, administrative of-
ficer of Internal Revenue at
Brenham, said today.
But, he added, many mis-
takes continue to pop up,
sometimes < in the oddest
places, in individual income
tax returns.
“I’m not advocating any
particular method of check-
ing or rechecking a return,”
the IRS representative de-
clared. “I would suggest,
though, that the return be
checked immediately on
completion, put aside for
two or three days, and then
rechecked. Frequently tax-
payers find an error which
didn’t show up , at first
lbok:
“ByMbeginning iww to pre-
pare their returns,” he add-
ed, “taxpayers will be able
to give themselves a breath-
ing spell in which to take
an objective look at their
work. For many, it may be
a worthwhile saving; for us,
il should make for better
and more efficient process-
ing.”

THE SMITHS
M. -M'ikutik.-and helped her j-were lauded - for their*.-fast
action in collecting a sample
from the animal and report-
ing the case to Mission by
telephone. Officials stated
the action by the students
and their teacher may have
prevented spread of screw-
worms into East Texas and
Louisiana. The Liberty class
is one of many vocational
agriculture departments in
the state cooperating with
the Southwest Screw worm
Eradication Program by con-
tacting producers and re-
porting all screwworm in-
festations found.
Eradication a u t horities
said that similar screwworm
outbreaks outside of the
overwintering area can be
expected in the months
ahead, but they are confi-
dent they can be controlled
if livestock producers will
keep their animals under
close surveillance, treat
wounds with approved in-
secticides and report infes-
tations promptly.
Mr. and Mrs. Felix Jurek
and Geneva spent Sunday
in Schulenburg with Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Schilhab.
In the afternoon, all visited
with Mrs. Willie Schilhab.
YES, WHY NOT?
A couple of City sales-
men stopped in a farm yard.
While looking around for
the farmer they noticed a
small calf that somehow had
got its tail caught in a knot-
hole in the barn door. Peer-
ing around a corner the
farmer heard this bit of con-
versation.
“I can’t figure how that
calf ever got through that
little hole,” said one sales-
man.
“Well, here’s what puzzles
me,” said the other, “if he
could get that far, why can’t
he get the rest of the way
through?”
