After a holiday lay-off the
Cowboys evened their season at
5-5 with 78-60 victory over East-
ern New Mexico University last
Saturday night in Rose Field
House.
With the game deadlocked at
27-27 at halftime Charles Dish-
man 6-1 Poke forward led the
Pokes to victory in the second
half. Dishman connected on nine
of 17 shots from the floor and on
eight of 11 free throws for 26
points including 19 during the
final 20 minutes. The 26-point
performance was a new single
game high for the Pokes topping
the 24 scored by Nate Madkins
against Southwest Texas. Dish-
man was carrying an 8.2 average
into the contest.
Making their first start in 15
days the Cowboys had trouble
getting their offense started in the
first half. They spent most of
their time trying to stay with the
speedy Greyhound fast-break.
The Cowboys finished with 28
of 82 shots for 34 per cent as
compared to 22 of 63 for 35 per
cent for the Greyhounds.
Charles Rappard was the only
other Poke to score in double
figures with 14 points. Nate
Madkins had an off night scor-
ing only nine markers. Madkins
had a 16.2 average going into the
game.
The Pokes held a slim 54-48
advantage in the rebound depart-
ment with Rappard grabbing 10.
However the game's leading re-
bounder was Esly Williams the
smallest man on the court at 5-9
with 13.

Edged By Aggies
A last second field goal by Vern
Owensby of Panhandle A&M
handed the Cowboys their second
straight defeat. The Pokes were
edged 50-49 by the Aggies in Rose
Field House on Dec. 20.
Owensby a 6-3 freshman sank
a 25-footer at the final buzzer.
Lenny Lee had pulled the Aggies
49-48 with 1:48 left to play. The
Cowboys tried to stall out the re-
maining but the ball was stolen
and the Aggies called time out
with six seconds left.
Norman Deckman who carried
the Aggies in the first half was
the game's leading scorer with
18 points.
Paul Fortin paced the Pokes
with 13 points and Charles Rap-
pard added 10. Nate Madkins
leading scorer and rebounder was
ill with the flu but suited-up for
the game.
The Cowboys outrebounded the
Aggies 34-24 with Rappard re-
trieving eight and Madkins and
Charles Dishman pulling down
five apiece.
The Pokes also outshot the
Aggies hitting 41 per cent from
the floor and 81 per cent from the
free throw line. The Aggies had
a 39.5 mark from the floor and
80 per cent from the free throw
line.
Looking for their first Texas
Athletic Conference Win the
Cowboys play host to the Tarle-
ton State College Texans in Rose
Field House Saturday night. The
game is scheduled to begin at
7:30.
The Pokes are 0-1 in Texas
Conference play. The Texans are
also winless in loop play with a
0-3 mark. At the beginning of
the week when the Brand went
to press the Cowboys had a 5-5
season record. However the
Pokes were to play Howard
Payne Tuesday night and Eastern
New Mexico Thursday night. The
Pokes have defeated those wo
clubs once this season.
Also at the first of the week
Tarleton had a 1-9 season record.
The Texans were to play South-
west Texas State last Wednesday.
Before last week's schedule
forward Nate Madkins continued
to lead the Poke scoring. Mad-
kins had a total of 155 points for
a 15.5 average. Paul Fortin is
close behind with 124 points for
a 12.4 average. Madkins is also
the top rebounder with 84 while
Fortin had 79. Charles Dishman
who had the season's high point
performance with 26 against East-
ern New Mexico has 75 points in
only seven games.
The Tarleton Texans are suf-
fering from the loss of half their
rebounding and scoring threat.
Marshall Procter and Don Moon
the only starters lost from last
year's squad managed an aver-
ago of 14.5 rebounds of a team
average of 31.6 and 33.3 points
of the team's 68.4 per game totals.
Lack of depth has been one of
Texan Coach Donnie Campbell's
biggest problems. He is able to
send five returning lettermen
into action but they lack the
height scoring punch and re-
bounding ability of last year's
squad. His freshmen and trans-
fers have to carry the load on the
backboards where that extra inch
or two means the difference in
rebounding ability.
The returning Texan lettermen
include R. M. Currin 6-5 junior;
Stanley Haedge 6-2 senior; Paul
Seidensticker 6-3 junior; Larry
Aldridge 5-8 senior; and Roy
Harris 6-0 sophomore.
Probable starters for the Pokes
will include Madkins and Fortin
at forward Charles Rappard at
center and Don Seamster and
Dishman at guards.
After tomorrow night's contest
have another conference game
Monday night as they face Mc-
Murry in Rose Field House.

Victory String Snapped
The Pokes' victory string was
snapped by a 81-68 loss to Mid-
western on Dec. 18 at Wichita
Falls. This was the Texas Ath-
letic Conference opener for the
Cowboys.
The free throw line proved to
be the deciding factor as the
Pokes outscored the Indians from
the field. The Indiana hit 23 of
32 free throws while the Cowboys
could only make eight of 15.
John Thompson of the Indians
was the game's high scorer with
27 points and 23 of these came
in the second half. John Henry
Young also scored 25 for Mid-
western. The Cowboys were led by Nate
Madkins and Charles Rappard
who dropped in 14 apiece. Dpn
Seamster was the only other
double-digit scorer with 11 points.
Young was 'the leading re-
bounder with 11 although the
the Pokes outrebounded the In-
dians 47-40. Madkins and Paul
Fortin each pulled down eight for
the Cowboys.
Midwestern sank 29 of 56 from
the floor for 51 per cent and
H-SU hit 30 of 75 for 40 per
cent.
Midwestern also won the Jun-
ior Varsity contest 89-66. James
Draper of Midwestern hit 29
points while Darrel Turnbow hit
