There is a new fad in college
basketball. It's not to outscore
your opponent but to out-stall
him. Weak teams have gone to
the philosophy that if we can't
"beat them let's hold them to a
close game. Lowly Austin Col-
lege did just that against Mid-
western last week when they
dueled the Indians to an un-
believable 14-11 battle. The
Tarleton Texans used the same
tactics against the Cowboys last
week but weren't quite as suc-
cessful as Austin College. Who
knows? We may return to the
"old days" when six field goals
-would win the game. But think
of what it would do to the play-
ers' scoring averages!
NCAA Decision Disappointing
Along with other Cowboy fans
we were disappointed in the
UCAA selection of Oklahoma
City University to play in the
post-season playoffs. We did
.knock off the highly-rated Chiefs
on their home court 87-74. And
their season record of 13-9 doesn't
compare with ours.
But our problem was that we
did not have a representative
j schedule. We can see why the
INCAA officials were reluctant to
choose Hardin-Simmons. True
we defeated OCU but the only
) other ball clubs of any recogni-
tion that we defeated were West
Texas and possibly Abilene Chris-
tian College. We were beaten by
the other powers Drake Brad-
ley and Creighton.
The scheduling problem will
have to be corrected if H-SU ex-
pects to become a basketball
power. And looking at the be-
ginnings of next year's schedule
it seems that we are moving in
the right direction. Counting the
four games with the city rivals
ACC and McMurry the Cowboys
have ten games already schedul

series with Oklahoma City.
Henson has also scheduled single
games on the road with one Big
Eight and one Southwest Confer-
ence school. There is also talk
about a two-night double header
for Dec. 18-19 in Rose Field House
with OCU New Mexico State and
Hardin-Simmons already lined
up. Henson is trying for a fourth
team and the two winners and
losers would play each other.
Seniors Are Departing
Five seniors will make their
final appearance in the court
Thursday night against ACC.
They are Don Seamster Nate
Madkins Mike Meriney Paul For-
tin and Ron Ziegler. Ed Mur-
phy should also be included in
this group although he won't be
playing Thursday night. Murphy
broke his ankle earlier in the
season.
We will be pulling for Nate
Madkins the Pokes' All-Ameri-can
candidate in Thursday night's
contest. Before the McMurry
game last Tuesday night Nate
needed 43 points to break the
H-SU record for most points in
one season. The record was set
in 1960-61 by Dave Kissinger with
545 points. Madkins had 502 go-
ing into the McMurry contest.
Iniraburals Planned
The intramural basketball
league closed out this week.
Philip Tinsworth director of in-
tramural activities is moving im-
mediately into the spring intra-
mural plans. An intramural vol-
leyball league will begin shortly.
Clubs and organizations are asked
to turn in their rosters to the phy-
sical education office. The league
is not restricted to clubs and or-
ganizations. Anyone who can
"rustle" up enough players can
enter a team.

meet.
Later in the spring a softball
league will be organized. How-
ever a different style of game
will be installed this year called
slow-pitch softball. Under slow-
pitch rules the pitcher must arc
the ball. The purpose of install-
ing this rule is to increase par-
ticipation says Tinsworth.

Murry game he needed only 44
points to break the school rec-
ord of 545 set by Dave Kissin-
ger in 1960-61. Although stand-
ing only 6-1 he is the club's
leading rebounder with 201.
Leading ACC attack will be

scored 451 points for a 21.5 av-
erage. In the last Poke-'Cat con-
