Pokes Take Second Place
In McMurry Track Meet
Hardin - Simmons University's
Cowboys had their best day of the
season Saturday afternoon by
winning second place in the
Annual McMurry relays.
The hosts went into the meet
as heavy favorites but were ex-
pected to receive some stiff op-
position from Howard Payne's
Yellow Jackets of Brownwood.
The Jackets failed to challenge
the host team.
In fact Abilene's Hardin-Simmons
University made the sec-
ond best showing with 36 points.
McMurry collected 94.
Howard Payne managed only a
distant fourth place with 26
points following Sul Ross's 33.
Hardin-Simmons won top hon-
ors in the high jump and javelin
throw events.
H-SU's Bill Offill and Howard
Payne's freshman David Caugh-
ran battled for honors in the in-
dividual dual of the day and in
the process set a new record in
the high jump.
After both had missed their
first two times at 6-6 Vi Offill put
forth that old extra kick and
cleared the bar on his last try.
Not to be out done Caughran
jumped the same on his final try.
Both jumpers missed on all
three tries with the bar raised
another inch and Offill won the
title on fewer misses. The H-SU
ace whose win boosted the Pokes
into the second place spot missed
a total of six times and Caugh-
ran eight.
Offill's leap was a record high
and missed the H-SU school
mark only a half-inch.
'Other Pokes placing were Bill
Fischer with a 21.9 220- yard
dash for second place Ty Morris
got a third in the 100 yard dash
with a 98 clocking Thurman
Williamson collected a third in
the discus throw on a toss of
135-8 Gerald Haynes placed
fourth in the open quarter with
a time of 50.8. ' "
Teams entered were McMurry
Hardin-Simmons Sul Ross How
ard Payne Eastern New Mexico
Tarleton State College West
Texas State University and Ar-
lington State College.
The track meet was run on a
bright sunny day with an oc-
casional brisk wind from the
southeast.
Hardin - Simmons University's
Cowboys travel to Stephenville
Saturday and have high hopes of
winning laurels in the annual
Tarleton State College Invita-
tional track and field meet.
Coach Keith Colson's track-
sters surprised a few sportswrit-
ers and fans when they finished
second only to strong host Mc-
Murry in the eighth annual Mc-
Murry Invitational last week.
Coach Colson said" early this
week that "with a bit of extra
effort we'll have a good chance
at Tarleton."
Preliminaries open at 10:30 a.
m. and finals in field events and
running events follow at 1 and 2
p. m. respectively.
Coach Colson said that the
Cowboys will be strongest in
field events especially in the
shot put discus javelin and high
jump events.
Eyes School Record
High jumper Bill Offill the 5-11
freshman star soared to a career
high of 6-6 last week to win
the event in record height for
the meet. His leap was only a
half-inch short of the school rec-
ord foran H-SU high jumper.
Following his win (on fewer
misses) over David Caughran of
Howard Payne last week Offill
said his next goal was to break
the school mark.
The Cowboys have a good
chance of winning or at least
placing high in both weight
events shot and discus with
Thurman Williamson competing.
H-SU's John Lachance who won
first place last week also is a
strong contender in the javelin
throw.
All told Coach Colson has a
dozen thinclads making the trip.
"We have the potential to place
in most of the events" Colson
said. "However it will take top
effort to win."
He cited senior Ty Morris a
contender in the 100-yard dash
and Bill Fischer in the 220. "Both
boys have been running real
good for us in workouts this
week" he asserted. .
King Is Questionable
Willie King the freshman
sprinter from New Mexico is still
a question mark for the Cowboys.
He was to have been one of the
aces in the shorter dashes this
year but a pulled muscle at the
start of the season has yet to turn
him loose.
Coach Colson said he plans
only to use him in the 440-yard
dash and relay events this
weekend. "His injury hurts him
most coming out of the blocks
on short distances" Colson said.
"He said it doesn't bother him as
much on the longer runs."
Bill Fischer another freshman
sprinter is due to compete along
with Morris in the century race.
Both also will run the 220.
H-SU also will have Gerald
Haynes and Ivan Smith in the
quartermile race. Glen Payne is
the only halfmile (880-yard)
entry. Payne and Charles Dunn
will run the mile with Dunn also
running the two-mile race.
Offill one of the high jump
favorites will be one of the
busiest Cowboys. He is due also
to see action in the broad jump
and the 120-yard high hurdles.
Derwood Coalson is another H-SU
high hurdler.
In the 330-yard intermediate
hurdles it will be Coalson and
Dick Springsteen who also is
entered in the pole vault event
Relay Events
"How we fare in the relay
events hinges on how King comes
through for us" Colson said. He
plans to run Morris Fischer
Haynes and King in the sprint
relay and substitute Springsteen
for Morris in the mile race.
The Cowboys will compete
against host Tarleton State West
Texas State of Canyon Texas
Lutheran College of Seguin Mid-
western University of Wichita
Falls and St. Edward's Univer-
sity of San Antonio.

H-SU Rodeo Without Rain -It
Can't Possibly Be True
A Hardin-Simmons University
senior says to a freshman "Next
week our rodeo starts so we can
expect a West Texas gully
washer." But the H-SU fresh-
man seem doubtful of the state-
ment because he witnessed one
of the only two years rain has
not fallen in the rodeo's 19 year
history.
In perfect weather a Saturday
night crowd saw Eastern New
Mexico collect 330 points for the
team championship.
Skip Driver compiled 120
points for individual honors and
was awarded the championship
saddle.
Hardin-Simmons' Paulette
Allen Taylor took high honors in
the girls' division.
New Mexico State placed sec-
ond behind Eastern -New Mexico
with 275 and third went to Texas
Tech on 215 points.
Tech also won the girls' team
championship.
At every turn there is always
someone trying to get into the act
but Bob Crill decided to reverse
the practice by getting out. His
bareback horse went along with
the ideal and bucked Crill over
the arena fence. Bob enjoyed
the rest of the performance from
the stands.
Jim Miles provided the high-
light of the evening when he
dogged a steer in 4.4 seconds. "
Paulette took the final go
round in barrel racing with 19.3
seconds the same time she posted
in the first go round. Her two
rides gave her an average of 38.6
in two runs.
Ed Fifer Texas Western won
second go round in calf roping
with 13.9 seconds and Terry
Scott Texas Tech and Clyde
Yarbrough NMS tied for the
average with times of 31.0 on
two calves.
Warren Townley won the rib-
bon roping event.
Hardin-Simmons students par-
ticipating were Paulette Allen
Taylor Ira Lee Inman Clyde
Kennedy Warren Townley John
Ed Fry Sonny Barnes Jimmy
Owen and Jack McWhorter.

took medalist honors with a 290.
ACC's Dick Horner beat Craig
Metz of East Texas in a ten-hole
playoff for second place honors.
H-SU's Van Newberry won the
driving contest with a swat of
