Dr. Robert Hutchings former President of the University
of Chicago and founder of the great books program once said:
"To destroy our Western Civilization we don't have to burn all
the books we merely have to leave them unread for one genera-
tion." The principal problem we have to face today as the
frontiers of human knowledge are being thrust back is that this
knowledge is being committed to print and it must be read be-
fore it can be used. Advances have been made in almost every
Held of human endeavor. We run faster fly higher and dive
deeper but still read at the same speed that our grandparents
did 300 words per minute.
The shame of it is that this is no longer necessary. The
whole philosophy of learning could be changed if every person
In this country would take the time to use his dormant capabili-
ties. No industry could use the same standards and techniques
It used 25 years ago and expect to continue in existence. Yet we
remain satisfied with the same old reading standards and tech-
niques. This would be fine if there were no better technique avail-
able. But a major breakthrough in tills field has occurred. Vic-
tor Hugo said: "There is nothing in this world as powerful as
an idea whose time has come." And this is just such an idea.
Some day our national survival may depend on how well we
are able to utilize our greatest resources the minds of our young
people. The "New Math" was first published in very much its
present form in the 1890's. Do we have to wait 70 years for each
valuable new concept to gain acceptance? Not if we can help it!

School Teacher
Discovers Amazing
Reading Technique
"I didn't invent fast read-
ing I just discovered it."
These words of Evelyn
Wood sum up the history
of the development of the
Reading Dynamics meth-
od. It was Mrs. Wood's
discovery 18 years ago
of the 6000-word-per-min-ute
reading speed of her
professor at the Univer-
sity of Utah that trigger-
ed today's overwhelming
interest in fast reading.
Mrs. Wood's curiosity
caused her to look for
other exceptional readers
and over the next few
years she found 50 people
who could read faster
than 1500 words per min-
ute with fine comprehen-
sion outstanding recall
and great satisfaction in
reading.
She was now sure it
was possible to read fast-
er than anyone had
thought but the question
of how these people did it
was not vet answered. It
took 18 years of toil and
research working with
"naturally" fast readers
before she began to find
the answer. Her quest led
her to experiment with
students at the Jordan
High School in Jordan
Utah where she was the
English teacher and the
girls' counselor. Eventual-
ly a technique was devel-
oped whereby the average
student was able to learn
to read 3 to 10 times fast-
er. She taught her meth-
od at the University of
Utah for three years re-
fining it even further.
Additional studies were
conducted at the Univer-
sity of Delaware and the
first Reading Dynamics
school was opened in
Washington D.C. in Sep-
tember 1959. Since that
time the Reading Dynam-
ics method has been ac-
cepted by authorities all
over the country. Today
Reading Dynamics schools
reach half way around the
world in 42 cities from
Vancouver British Co-
lumbia to Sydney Aus-
tralia. There are schools
in every major city across
the United States as far
west as Hawaii and plans
arc already under way for
further expansion to keep
up with the increasing de-
mands in new areas.

BILL GLASS Professional Football Player
Cleveland Browns and Author
Bill took an initial test on which he read at the rate of 222
words per minute with 88 per cent comprehension. After
the very first lesson his rate practically doubled and by the
end of the eight weeks course Bill was effectively reading
at 2000 words per minute with as good or better compre-
hension. Bill Glass has a lot to say about Reading: Dynamics:
"Being able to read much faster than I had ever thought
imaginable has increased the span of my horizons tre-
mendously. I now can read the bookshelf full of books
that I have never had the time to read before. It is a
thrilling experience to pick up a book of three or fbur
hundred page3 and finish it in about an hour for it
formerly took me several days of reading at my old slow
speed. I plan for my whole family to take the Evelyn
Wood Course."
KURT KAISER Director of Music
World Records Inc.
Kurt began the Reading Dynamics Program with a reading
speed of 260 words per minute. By the second lesson his
reading rate had tripled and after another week's practice
it began to really soar upward. On a final week's practice
the rate of 2392 words per minute.
Kurt Kaiser comments on his newly acquired skill:
"After learning to read dynamically I have enjoyed
reading a great deal more. Particularly periodicals that
once were slow but now can be read at a greatly in-
creased rale. I have and will recommend this course
to others."
Senators Educators Business
Leaders Praise Results
Among its greatest boost-
ers are leaders in govern-
ment business and educa-
tion. Here are personal ex-
amples of Reading Dynamics
results. Senator Herman Tal-
madge Georgia: "In my
opinion if these reading
techniques were instituted
in the public and privato
schools of our country it
would be the greatest single
step we could take in edu-
cational progress."
Senator Proxmlre Wiscon-
sin: "I must say that this 'is
one of the most useful edu-
cation experiences I have
ever had. It certainly com
pares favorably with the ex-
perience I've had at Yale
and Harvard."
Senator Symington Mis-
souri: "I can read most ma-
terial at speeds above 3000
wpm and technical material
In the 2000 wpm range."
Ben H. Willlngham presi-
dent of Genesco: "I feel rea-
sonably confident that al-
most any company that
would encourage its execu-
tive group to put forth the
time and effort necessary to
apply this improvement in
reading skill would find the
results quite worthwhile."
