Wetland Reserve Program Sign up
• The second Wetlands Reserve Program sign up will be held February 28, through March 11,1994.
• The purpose of this program is to provide owners of eligible land an opportunity to offer a permanent
easement for purchase by the Secretary of Agriculture and to receive cost-share assistance to restore crop
land to natural wetlands.
Eligible land includes those wetlands farmed under natural conditions, substantially altered lands as
determined by USDA’s Soil Conservation Service (SCS), or prior converted crop lands (when
conversion was commenced prior to December 23.1985) and riparian areas that link wetlands. These
lands must be at least 2 acres in size and have been annually planted or considered planted to an
agricultural commodity in at least 1 of the 5 crop years 1986through 1990and have been capable of being
cropped in 1992 or 1993.
In Addition. SCS and the Department of the Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service will assist ASCS
in determining the eligibility and environmental quality of the acres offered by landowners. For more
information pertaining to eligible landowner requirements, landowner’s obligations, USDA’s obliga-
tions, cost-share payments, easement payments and more, contact your local ASCS office.
Corn & Sorghum 93 Disaster Assistance Program
County offices received an information bulletin that contained information pertaining to com and
sorghum producers that participated in the 1993 set-aside program. This bulletin indicated the
POSSIBILITY that the final deficiency payments would be less than the advance. Because of this
situation it may result in overpayments to the producers. However, since ASCS is administering a
current Disaster program, producers would be eligible for some advance deficiency overpayment
forgiveness.
Producers that have already filed a complete application for 1993 disaster assistance on com or
sorghum have already covered themselves for some advance deficiency overpayment forgiveness. For
those producers that have not filed at all or because they didn’t feel that they qualified are reminded they
MUST request disaster assistance by March 4, to be eligible for POSSIBLE forgiveness of advance
deficiency overpayments.
Any questions should be directed to your local ASCS office.
