Mud’s Your Problem,
Says Local Soilman
The following is by Baker H.
Davis, work unit conservation-
ist with the Soil Conservation
Service in La Grange:
Mud is a product of soil ero-
sion which affects everyone.
Many people who live in our
cities do not give it much
thought because it appeal’s to
them to be a problem of the
farmer. Let’s take a closer look
at one of the products of un-
controlled soil erosion—down
stream mud damage.
Some of the mud damage
from soil erosion affects the
farmer first and the city dwel-
ler only indirectly. For in-
stance, during intense storms,
mud may be spread over farm-
land not only destroying crops,
hut making the land less capa-
ble of producing future crops.
Stream cliannels become clog-
ged, musing the swamping of
formerly productive farmland.
