According to director Dr. James A. PanowsH the current Van Ellis Theatre
production of THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT defies definition in terms of pure
theatrical style. He noted "It is indeed many plays rolled into one. On one level it is a
realistic romantic drama. On another level a grotesque expressionistic distortion or
reality . At the same time it is a satirical morality play as well as a flight into fan-
tasy. And yet"Panowski added "in spite of its stylistic ecclecticism MADWOMAN
is above all else superb entertainment."
With a dazzling sense of make-believe Jean Giraudoux lifts the play above mere
protest into a world of poetry. Dr. Panowski also mentioned MADWOMAN'S
distinguish ancestors: "The sublime delusions of DON QUDCOTE the swift
wizardry of THE PIED PIPER themad tea party in ALICE IN WONDERLAND the
mock trial in KING LEAR and the sparkling philosophical jokes of Voltaire and
George Bernard Shaw are all pleasantly combined under the same roof."
Like all truly great comedies THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT has something
touching and sad about it: for only through dreams can there be escape and only in
fairy tales do the wicked perish so prettily. Giraudoux like many another seems to
suggest that in a world as mad as our own sanity may well be the possession of the
insane rather than the the sane. Or as Don Quixote in MAN OF LA MANCHA puts it :
"Too much sanity may be madness. And maddest of all to see life as it is not as it
should be."
Act One opens on the terrace of the Chez Francais a quaint little restant in the
Chaillot District of Paris. The President (Dr. Clint Dunagan) the Baron (Jerry
Cotton) and the Broker (Bob Page) propose to form a new corporation that will make
them more millions and allow them once again to exploit the ""little people." The
only problem is thy need a name andaxommodity. The answer to their dilmma is
provided in the person of the Prospecton(Gary Rogers) who - for a healthy price -comes
up with a corporate title and reveals that he has discovered oil under the city of
Paris. Since the City Architect refused to allow him to drill for petrolium he sends off
an agent Pierre (Gary Stroope) with a bomb slated to explode at noon. The clock
strikes twelve but the bomb has not been detonated. In rushes a befuddled Officer
(Tim Boss) with the unconscious Pierre. The young man could not go through with the
deed and was intercepted by the Officer as he attempted to jump into the Seine. The
Prospector attempts to abduct Pierre back to the fold but is foiled by the eccentric
Countess Aurelia (Mary Arden) the Madwoman of Chaillot.
The Countess is a humane imperious and loving woman who collects bones for all
the stray cats In Paris and inhabits a cellar under its streets. Around her like
pigeons flock all the gentle vagabonds - the peddlers the flower girls the jugglers
the street singers the deaf-mutes who have seen the corruption of the world as it is
and have opted to join the Countess in her special world of truth and beauty and
illusion.
Pierre reveals to her the plans totlestroy the beauties of Paris in order to reach and
exploit the oil. At first Aurelia stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the existence of
greed and evil. However the Ragpicker (Max Hurst) finally convinces the Countess
that the world has changed that people are no longer happy and that they are in
danger of extinction. Countess Aurelia immediately formulates a plan to lure all the
Evil Ones to her cellar. She sends a bottle of water earth and kerosine mixed together
and writes the President that this is what she has found in her basement. Each
vagabond is sent to his post and Aurelia walks off on the arm of Pierre who has now
become both a recruit and a disciple.
Left alone on stage the Young waitress Irma (Brenda Susan Hill) confesses that
she's never said "I love you" to any man. But somehow Pierre is different-she is in
love!
Act Two takes place in Aurelia's cellar at 21 Rue de Chaillot. With the help of the
Sewer Man (Billy Don Smith) she learns the secret of the moving stone which
discloses a set of steps leading down into the bowels of the earth. Once a person starts
down those steps the Sewer Man explains there is no turning back and no returning
ever again.
Arelia is then joined by three other "madwomen": Mme. Constance (Jeanne
Clamon) and her imaginary dog Dickie Mme. Gabrielle (Terri Loter) who keeps
canaries and listens to voices in henhofwater bottle; and Mme. Josephine (Shelley
McLeroy) who spends her mornings sitting on a bench by the palace waiting for
President Wilson - even though he's been dead since 1924. In what can best be
described as a "Mad Tea Party''1 the fkir cronies set out to determine the fate of
humanity.
A mock trail is held with the Ragpicker assuming the role of the President and
speaking for the defense. Aurelia naturally is the prosecutor. The Ragpicker
eloquently laments the fact that it's not the fault of the rich if they are rich. When
asked what he proposes to do with the oil the Rigpicker-President answers: "I
propose to make war! I propose to conquer the world!" Mme. Joshlne abruptly ends
the trail the Evil' Ones are found guilty by the jury of vagabonds and Aurelia of
giving full permission to exterminate them.
The court is dismissed and Irma reminds the Countess that it is time for her af-
ternoon nap. Pierre comes in with Aurelia's nine-foot feather boa that had been
missing for some time. Half-awake half-asleep Aurelia recalls the days of her youth
and Pierre willingly plays the role of Adolphe Bertaut who had left her many years
ago
The street above is suddenly filled with taxis and limousines as the Evil Ones flock
to Chaillot. Aurelia moves the stone and the steps are revealed once more. One by
one the Presidents the Prospectors the Press Agents and the Ladies of the Power
Elite march into her cellar and down into the depths of the earth. The Countess then
pushes the stone again and the steps disappear; wickedness has been destroyed.
The vagabonds return to joyously announce that everything has changed. The air is
pure the sky is clear people are happy and life is beautiful again. Aurelia urges
Pierre and Irma to kiss each othen They do and another miracle is reaffirmed the
miracle of love. The Countess sums it all up in the following speech: "Well there we
are. And you see how simple it all was? .Nothing is ever so wrong in this world that a
sensible woman can't set it right irt the cdurse of an afternoon."
THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT will complete it's run on Friday and Saturday
Apr. 15 & 16 at 8 p.m. with a special 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.
