"It was an extreme learning ex-
perience" commented H-SU coed Paula
Herring speaking of her summer foreign
study tour of Europe with a group spon-
sored by Oklahoma Baptist University.
"It was mind-expanding to see how
other cultures live" she said.
"Europe helped me to realize how young
the United States is compared to the an-
cient European nations.
"We who have been born and raised in
the United States tend to forget that there
is a whole world where conditions and
ways of life are so much different from our
own" she commented.
"World War II became real to me this
summer" Paula stated. "You can still see
the results of war in many of the European
cities.
"Living here in the States I had never
really been touched by the horrors of war.
Seeing the destruction for the first time
made a deep impression on me."
Paula commented that she was amazed
at the number of people living in countries
where English is not the main language
who could speak English. "They tend to
know more about our language and culture
than we know about theirs" she said.
Of the countries she visited Paula listed
Austria as her favorite. "The people in
Austria were extermely friendly" she
explained. "Their way of life was much
slower and relaxed than ours. The country
was beautiful and it was very clean" she
recalled.
This summer H-SU in cooperation with
Oklahoma Baptist University will offer a
10-week foreign study tour of Europe.
History professor Dr. David Funderburk
and English professor Dr. Robert Hamner
will represent the H-SU faculty on the tour.
Information concerning the cost of the
tour dates of departure and return and
other details of the trip may be obtained
from Dr. Funderburk or Dr. Hamner.
