Strange Tale Told
Of Early La Orange
School Teacher
llie early history of Texas is
replete with unsolved myster-
ies but few of them are as bi-
zarre, or as unexplainable, as
the peculiar circumstances at-
tending the rescue of one
Josiah Wilbarger from a death
In the wilderness.
In 183ft. two years after
Texas had become a republic,
Josiah Wilbarger was a school
teacher living at La Grange,
Texas. At the time of this
story, however, he was visit-
ing his friend, Reuben Horns-
by, who lived near where the
present towit of' Austin is Id-
eated.
One morning lAfilbarger and
four companions, who have
been designated in history
fdmply as Christian. Strother,
Haynes, .and Standifer, rode
forth have a look at the
country, as they intended to
settle in the vicinity They had
rtot r»dden far when they
chUght sight of a lone Indian.
As he made tip signs of return-
ing their friendly greeting, thev
took out after hitn. In the thick
dwarf cedar that hovered the
hills Hritvevt*, they soon lost
tr^ck of the Agt'a^e.
Thinking no more of the in-
cident, they returned to the
nabks of a little Creek and
stopped to take a much needed
r^st. After dismounting and
picketing their horses, thev
hnrawleil out on the ground
They were thus' caught unpre-
pared when a pack of howling
savages launched an attack.
Ip the ensuing struggle,
Strother and Christian were
both mortally wounded and
Wilbarger rbd,£ivhd an arrow

tihwever, and. along with
Stiamdifer and Haynes, attempt-
ed! to flee the field. Again he
was sfiot this time with a rifle
hall through his neck. He fell
-----fitly dead, and his
continued their flight.
The victorious Indians then
approached the fallen men.
They cut the throats of Stro-
ther and Christian, but, believ-

Mrs. Evelyn Roberts, who
underwent a major operation
at Houston last Wednesday, is
reported to be doing nicely.

ing that Ihe unconscious Wil-
barger was already dead, they
merely stripped him of his
clothing and then scalped him.
In spite of this hideous treat-
ment, Wilbarger remained
alive.
Some time after the Indians
left, Wilbarger regained con-
sciousness. Although weak
from loss of blood and suffer-
ing from cold and from his
bounds, he attefnpted to make
his way back to his friend’s
home, which was about six
miles distant. But he had gone
only about 600 yards when he
collapsed.
In the exhausted sleep that
followed, Wilburger had a
strange dream, in which a vi-
sion of his sister, who lived in
Missouri, appeared before Him
and said: “Brother Josiah, you
are too weak to go on by your-
self. Remain here and friends
will come to take care of you
before the setting of the sun. ’
In spite of Wilbarger’s pleas
that she remain with him, she
then departed in the direction
of the Hornsby’s home.
In the meantime, Standifer
and Haynes had returned to
the Hornsbys and reported
their companions dead, Wil-
barger included. They had seen
him fall, they said, and there
was no doubt that he was dead.
That night, however, Mrs
Hornsby had a dream, in which
she saw Wilbarger lying in the
brush, naked, bloody, and
scalped, hut not dead. At first
she dismissed the dream and
fell asleep again, only to ex-
perience the same dream. This
time it was so vivid that she
aroused her husband and told
him of her experiences.
“Wilbarger is not dead,” she
said. “I know he’s not. I insist
that you and the men go look
fot him.”
So insistent was Mrs. Horns-
by that the men got up early
the next morning and organ-
ized a searching party. Standi-
fer and Haynes led them to
the scene of tHe fight, and af-
ter searching in the brush for
some little time, they came up-
on Wilbarger, propped up a-
gainst a cedar tree. He was al-
most dead but there was a
spark of life left. Responding
to good care, he became com
pletely well and lived eleven
years.
The most singular thing about
this happening, However, was
to be revealed still later. Be-
fore many weeks had passed
it was learned that Wilbarger’s
sister — the same one who had
appeared to him in his dreams
T-rhad died in Missouri, 700
miles away, the day before the
Indian attack occurred.—Jack

CARD OF THANKS
I wish to express my grati- j
tude to Dr. Albert H. Broden
of Hallettsville for saving my
! life.
For the past 19 years I suf-
fered with heart trouble. It
would skip every few heats
and would make me so Weak
that I would nearly become
exhausted. Every doctor 1
went to would tell me there is
no cure for it. I also had a
fallen stomach. I was terribly
underweight.
My left arm was almost use-
less so that I could not lift any-
thing with it for numbness and
pain. My nose was dry and
constantly irritated. Life was
in despair. I had only about
I two and a half weeks treat-
ments from Dr. Broden, and
he used no injections afld no
\ medicine. Today T feel like I
never had any heart trouble
and it is like a dream to tuff. 1
wish that every one suffering
as I did would take my advice
and let Dr. Broden do his best
as he did for me and enjoy life
I like I am.
