Durene Sims of Edgewood lists painting and photography as her hobbies.
She didn’t take up painting until about seven years ago, around 1976.
Since she became interested in oil painting, she has taken lessons from Dot-
tie Fox, Rita Harper and Jerry Flatt. She hasn't gotten into painting portraits
or animals yet, but enjoys every other subject such as flowers, still life, old
barns, etc. One thing she definitely emphasized is, "I don’t do abstracts."
Mrs. Sims said a friend made a comment one day that she would like to
learn to oil paint, and “I said, ‘So would I'.” The two made appointments for
lessons. The friend lasted only three weeks, but a new love was born in Mrs.
Sims
One of her paintings won the Best of Fair award in the Van Zandt County
Fair this year in the amateur division. “Painting has opened new doors for
me! I’ve met so many different people. Painting is on»* hobby that r.c.ti gets
old," she commented.
She also keeps the yard, reads when she has the chance and sews. “I used to
sew all the time and paint a little, now I sew a little and paint all the time,”
she noted.
She and her husband, Jake, like to travel whenever possible, but being self-
employed, her husband finds little time to get away. They both enjoy
photography.
The Sims, faithful members of the Lanewood Church of God, have three
children: Mark and Joel of Edgewood, and Evanna, who is married to a
minister and lives in Tulia. They also have two granddaughters, Heather, 5,
and Leah, 3.

Dear Ann Landers: 1 read these heartwarming com-
ments in a throwaway neighborhood paper recently. Hav-
ing grown up in a small town, they really took me back to
my roots. Sorry, there was no attribution. 1 hope you will
print it.--A Madisonian Who Admires You
Dear Madisonian: What a refreshing commentary I
Thanks for sending it on. It is sure to jar loose some
wonderful memories.
EVERYWHERE, USA
You know you're in a small town when-
You don’t use your turn signal because everyone knows
where you are going.
You dial a wrong number and talk for 15 minutes
anyway.
You call every dog on the street by name and he wagi
his tail at you.
You get married and the local newspaper devotes a
quarter page to the story.
You write a check on the wrong bank and they cover
for you.
You miss a Sunday at church and get six get-well cards.
The day of your father's funeral the neighbors bring in
enough food to feed an army.
You hear about your daughter-in-law's pregnancy
before she does. (The gal who did the lab work is your
next-door neighbor.)
The day your kitchen caught on fire you received 22 in-
vitations to supper.
You drive into a ditch five miles out in the country and
word gets back to your family before you do.
Thank the good Lord for small towns and the people in
them. They are the last bastion of human concern and
caring.
Dear Ann Landers: I am writing in response to
"Shocked and Ashamed in Boston,” regarding the ignor-
ance of today’s young people when it comes to geography.
Since your respondent is so concerned about geogra-
phy. I suggest he stretch a little of that concern to gram-
mar. His own. He wrote, "More than half the people
questioned did not know where Albany WAS.” To my
knowledge, Albany is still in New York. He also wrote 42
percent had no idea where London WAS. I believe it is
still in England.
While I'm at it, it is unbelievable how many educated
people misuse the word “unique.” They say something is
VERY unique or QjJlTE unique. Either it is unique or it
isn’t. There i» no degree of. comparison.
One more thing: Why do people say "a matter of life
AND death." It cannot be both. The phrase is “a matter
of life OR death.”
1 don’t expect to see this in prim. It isn't as important
as knowing the proper way to hang toilet paper. I have
written before.--Suzy in Sioux Falk
Dear Suzy: Well, who’d a thunk it?-Here’s your let-
ter I Please write again. Obviously you are an astute ob-
server and an English major.
Dear Ann: I am 10 years old. My 14-year-old sister al-
ways yelk at me for being such a slowpoke. I would rather
take longer and do things right. How can I get her off my
back?--Tommy in Ark.
Dear Tommy: Tell her turtles know more about
roads than rabbits.
Even if drinking U the “in” thing in your crowd, it
needn't crowd you out. Learn the facts from Ann Lan-
ders’ booklet, “Booze and You-For Teen-Agers Only.”
