Rev. C. W. Lokey came
to serve in 1925 and found
the church deep in debt
and behind on all its obli-
gations. He devised a plan
whereby the farmer would
set aside one acre of land as
"The Lord's Acre" with
proceeds to be given to the
church. Also, loans of 50
cents or $1 were made to
members to be invested
with profits to be given to
the church. In the Fall of
the year a certain Sunday
would be designated to br-
ing in gifts and profits and
celebrate with a covered
dish dinner Soon this Sun-
day became known as
"Home Coming", a tradi-
tion reserved for many
years. Rev. Cokey's plan
was so successful that it's
use spread world wide, and
is still in use today under
various names.

McRoy reindicted
TYLER - A Smith
County grand jury has
reindicted a New Harmony
man for murder in the
death of his 11 year-old
daughter two years ago.
Eugene Curtis McRoy,
38, is accused of smother-
ing his daughter Trisha
with a pillow on or near Ju-
ly 4, 1981. In a previous in-
dictment returned in June,
McRoy was accused only of
being engaged in conduct
that caused serious bodily
injury to the girl, as the in-
dictment did not specify
how Trisha McRoy was
killed.
During the 1981 holi-
day, Van Zandt and Smith
county law enforcement of-
ficials mounted a massive
search effort after Trisha
McRoy had been reported
missing. Her badly decom-
posed body was found in a
stream near the Van
Zandt-Smith county line
about five miles from her
home.
McRoy, who is legally
blind and often referred to
his daughter as "my eyes, ”
was arrested at his Tyler
home by Smith County
deputies May 20, after
what was only referred to
as “an unexpected develop-
ment" emerged in the two-
year-old case.

In their regular meeting,
September 6, Mayor Ralph
Timmons reported to the
council that the proposed
ordinance would be illegal
according to a law passed
oy the State Legislature
recently.
Timmons explained that
only the Texas Department
of Public Safety and the
City of Houston can have
an ordinance regulating
traffic according to weight.
Van's proposed or-
dinance was based on
weight, according to the
council.
However, in the Tuesday
night meeting, Timmons
reported that the law states
the DPS. is the sole
authority only on state

posed ordinance was legal
