Fruitvale'school tax rate raised to 97.2
ly Kerry Yancey
FRUITVALE - The
Fruitvale School Board ap
proved a tax rate of 92.7
cents per $100 valuation
Tuesday night, raising
taxes leas than three per-
cent over last year’s effec-
tive rate.
Last year's tax rate was
80 cents per $100 valua-
tion, but with different
valuations on property this
year, the rate needed to
raise the same amount of
tax revenue calculated out
to 90 cents, according to
figures released by
Don
Superintendent
Travis.
The rate will fund a
$971,127 budget approved
by the school board August
25, which is
$71,000 leas than last year’s
budget. The total local tax
levy expected is $509,000. K*lon-

A school night for
Scouting will be held at
five Van Zandt County
schools Tuesday at 7:30
p.m., according to Scott
Wilson, district executive
for Boy Scouts of America.
All boys and their
parents are invited to at
tend the event, which will
provide information about
Scouting and Cub Scouting
and will give the boys the
opportunity to sign up for
Boy Scouts and Cub
Scouts, Wilson said.
The Scouting night will
be held in Wills Point,
Edgewood, Canton, Grand
Saline and Van, Wilson
said, and will be sponsored
by the various Scout troops
and Cub packs.
Scouting does three
basic things, the district
executive said: It helps
boys with character
development, personal
fitness and citizenship.
Personal fitness not only
includes physical fitness,
he said, but also mental
and moral fitness. "And
citizenship is not just
saluting the flag. It is also
citizenship in the com-
munity and citizenship in
the home."
Scouting gets involved
with a lot of community
projects, Wilson said.
Learning is also a big part
of scouting, He added.
Some schooli sponsor
Scouting as p*rt of their
educational piogram.
