Something old something new
nothing borrowed but something's
blue.
Old stuff
Howard Payne (in the neck) is
voted to win the Texas conference.
The last time Howdrd Payne wasn't
voted the favorite they were still
counting five points for a touchdown.
Some sports writers have gone so
far as to just call the roll from second
on down.
Moose Stovall looks like about the
brightest star in Coleman's blue
heaven . about that limp it should
experience a miraculous recovery
before tomorrow night .. prc-game
limps have a way of doing that ye'
know.
Our new quarterback is so cool it's
positively refrigerating to watch him
play ball. But don't think Jim Bob
can't get rough. He sounds like a
tough top sargc when ho goes to
calling signals. One would never
accuse Jim Bob of being a ball shark.
At first glance he looks more like an
astronomy major or a serious student
of Egyptology but can that boy
chunk passes!
Something a littlo bit nowor
For the first time in three of four
seasons ACC will be the undor-pups
when they enter the arena with those
Vanishing Americans from south of
town. Nearly everybody who goes
wild and calls results in the Texas
conference hands the fight to Mc-
Murry. All of which shouldn't bother
us too much. McMurry teams have a
way of looking good on paper es-
pecially before the season starts.
But don't under-rate the redskins
remember in '40 we were supposed to
walk over them by some score like
forty or fifty to nothing: we passed
and punted to a wavering C-0 win
And tlicy have a new coach this
year who is great stuff even if his
great stuff was in Oklahoma. Figur-
ing any change from the one they
had last is a change for the better
they have a right to be optimistic.
Something's blue (sigh)
ACC opens what may be the last
season for "the duration" with a
"new" coach and a Gordian knot of
game. If the Cats win it will be an
upset and how. If they don't win
don't be too discouraged. Only once
has a Purple squad been able to turn
the tide and tame the Lions. It was
in '42 and Tug Jones was out for
blood and the Little Ail-American
that night. This is '42 and Tug Jones
is out for Brooklyn and the govern-
ment lettuce -it's a long way to
New York.
The affair with Lubbock flying
school will be much more colorful

Though the first Optimist closely
resembles that of last year future
issues will sec big changes according
to Flndlay. Membership In the As-
sociation Collegiate Press has been
applied for. If obtained membership
in that organization will place the
college publication in front ranks of
college newspapers of this country.
Next week's paper will contain six
pages instead of four. Features will

she will launch one of the most ex-

made from this campus.
