GRAND SALINE -
The Grand Saline City
Council’s denial of a
building permit to James
Gann will be settled in
court.
The city was notified by
Gann's attorney Bob
Bartlett of Canton that
Gann would begin
building. The letter, dated
July 22, said that all the
specifications had been
met with, and no reason
was given for the denial.
Gann proposed to build
three apartments on two
lots near the hospital. A
number of citizens ap-
peared at the July council
meeting to protest the
plan.
The city is working on a
zoning ordinance but it
hasn’t been approved yet.
The zoning map would
probably designate the
area in question as single-
family dwellings.
After receiving the letter
from Gann, the city filed
for an injunction to stop
construction until the mat-
ter can be reviewed in
district court.
The temporary injunc-
tion was granted by visiting
Judge K. Baker August 2.
The matter will be heard
in district court August 19.
at 9 a.m.
City Attorney Ricky Ray
of Canton said he believed
the court was the proper
place to decide whether the
city had the authority to
deny the permit.
The matter was reviewed
by the city council at its
Tuesday meeting.
In other business, the crease. The matter will go

Fruitvale sets hearing time
FRUITVALE - The
Fruitvale School Board will
hold a budget hearing
August 25 at 7:50 p.m.
A drop in oil and
mineral values in the
district will tighten the
funds for the school, accor-
ding to Superintendent
Don Travis. "The budget
will probably be less than
last year's budget,” he said.
Although real estate
values are up, the district
lost about $10 million in
taxable values.
School Board Member
Carl Evans resigned.
Several policy changes
were made. A policy on ex-
emptions from testing was
approved. The exemptions
apply only to semester tests
and are based on a com-
bination of attendance and
grades.
A policy on student
automobiles was amended
to require permits for
students to park in the high
school parking lot.
The policy on leave for
teachers was amended.
Teachers have received five
days of leave paid by the
local district. From now
on, two of the five days will
be paid by the district;
teachers must pay for their
own substitute on the other
three days. However, an
incentive is also planned
which would pay teachers
$20 for any of the five days
not used during the year.
Lunch prices were rais-
ed. Kindergarten through
grade four will pay 85 cents
prepaid, 95 cents charged.
Last year's price was 75
cents. Grades 5 through 12
will pay $1 prepaid, $1.10
charged. Last year's price
was 85 cents. Adults will
pay $1.15 prepaid, $1.25
charge. The previous cost
was $1.
One transfer student was
approved. Bus drivers and
maintenance people were
hired. Bordens was given
the milk bid. Edgewood
First National Bank will re-
main the district's
depository.
