According' to a statement of
The Bulletin by one of its lar-
Whut is it about America
that makes so many poo
pie desire to come here to
live? Is it our natural re-
sources? Is it our geo-
graphical position? Are we
endowed with a superior
intelligence? The answer to
these questions, of course,
is no. Why, then, have we
in the I'nited Slates made
more progress than most
of tlie other nutions of the
world ?
You can study the ques-
tion of the progress made
in America from any angle
you wish, and you will al-
ways come up with just
one word—FRFKDOM. The
difference in the l!nitcd
Stater of America and all
the other countries in the
world lies in the amount of
freedom we have enjoyed.
First of ull our Nation
has a form of -government
that guarantees the individ-
ual rights of man which
make up the very fibre of
freedom. Our government
does not possess the power
to grant us these rights,
it recognizes them as "un-
alienable” gifts from a pow-
er which is higher than
any civil government. It
should l.e worthy to note
that ours was the first
government that ever took
this exalted view of the
individual.
Secondly, ours is a sys-
tem which provides invest-
tors, workers and consum-
ers with f.ef*dom of choice
and freedom of opportun-
ity. Ours is n land in which
the productive facilities of
our nation are owned by
the people—not the -govern-
ment.
Finally, ours is a system
based on the profit motive
which gives the individual
the incentive to do his best
nnd rewards him according
to his ability nnd his pro-
duction.
Behind these basic prin-
ciples which form the heri-
tage of each American citi-
zen there are certain basic
assumptions which we must
also safeguard if we are to
pass freedom on to the fu-
ture generations First, of
all there is the dignity of
the individual. This is im-
plicit In tt»- letter amt the
spirit of oui <'.institution
Next, the Ages- et
freedom depends .ipoii ric
degree of oui moral and
ethical sUMuinid If No-
vast majority ->f Am-ricana*
suddenly were to cense
Iwing honest, out freedom
would have to be ruitailed
sharply. If the vu>t majoi
ity of Americans suddenly
were to cease believing in
the individual dignity of
man, we uil would Is- look-
ing to the government ^'r
everything and fii-doni
would lx- lost forever.
