NEW USE FOR RECORDER—Fishermen are re-
sourceful. When they run into a problem it doesn't take
; long for them to solve it.
Here’s fine for the book—and other fishermen: Use
a tape recorder to unwind and store monofilament line.
Hook th* line onto an empty recorder reel and start the
motor.
Reel can be held between your knees.
When the time comes to rewind the line onto your
fishing reel, run a pencil through the recorder reel.
Then hold the pencil behind your knees and the reel
between your knees. This way you can exert pressure
with the knees to keep the line taut.

TIPS for OUTDOORSMEN
BY VERN SANFORD
SAVE CIGARETTE FILTERS— Keep a supply of
us*il cigarette filters on hand in your tackle box. They
are great for polishing spoons and other lures that may
have become dull with use. Also handy to cover tips of
hooks.

DO NT SHOOT THAT IIAWK—Most hawks serve
a useful purpose. So ... to be on the aefe side, never
shoot a hawk.
All but three vanities of hawks live almost entirely
on small rodents that eat birds’ eggs. Harmful hawks
are the Cooper's, sharpskin and goshawk. Hut even these
three have some good points. The outlaws can be identi-
fied by their short wings and short tails.

DANGEROUS HOOKS—When the day’s fishing
i* done most cane pole anglers wrap their lines around
the poles and dump them in the car for the trip home.
This is a bad practice, since the hooks are usually
exposed and can ruin upholstery and even human flesh.
Guard these hooks by wrapping them in tin foil.

CARP FISHING FUN—Since the carp Is considered
a rough fish it is scorned by many fishermen. Hut the
lowly carp can provide great fun during off seasons.
They are dainty hiters. So fish them with small
sinker* , or none at all. If a cork Is uaed, be sure it is as
inconspicious as possible.
A quill is best, for not only is it almost invisible,
but it bobs under at the slightest pull on the line.

WARNING VEST FOR HUNTERS—Danger of
being shot by mistake while hunting is minimized by
wearing bright clothing. Such a garment can be made
at small expense by cutting sleeves off an old white
shirt, to make vest, then spray the improvised apparel
with a bright aerosol paint.
CLEAN THAT FLY LINE—You can get the same
results, if not better, by cleaning a fly line well, instead
of dressing it with floatant. Quite often the floatant
collects dirt which weight the line.
Most good lines will float for a long time after be-
ing cleaned, providing the finish isn’t marred.

HOMEMADE SQUIRREL CALI^-Old-time pio-
neer squirrel hunters owned no such thing as a com-
mercially manufactured squirrel call. So they had to
depend on their their own ingenuity to make a caller.
One of the best was made by rubbing a wet whis-
key bottle cork across the smooth surf nee of a piece of
window glass.
If you’re going to try it, of course, you really need
not limit yourself to thin specific type of cork.
