VAN - The Van City
Council voted to ad vert me
foe construction bids on
the city * third water well
Thursday night and tet a
special meeting Tuesdav
June 12 to open the bid*
"We re ready to go."
Engineer Jerry Clark of
Lufkin told the council
The drilling of the 915 foot
*-*<imated depth) well is
expected to cost around
$161 500 with the total
project estimated at
$230 000
dart noted that only
two or three firm* in nor
theast Tex** would be
qualified to take on the
jot> and he recommended
that construction time be
limited to 45 day* That *
very liberal " he noted
The big holdup will
probably be the arrival
time of the pump*
The council looked over
the bid document Clark
prevented at he noted (hat
he would personally con
tact the two or three firm*
around the area that would
be interested in bidding on
the project
If bid* come in below
expectation* Clark noted
that the council should
think about running a
bigger than planned water
main to link the well with
the city treatment plant
That way the city won t
have to replace the line if a
fourth well it added Clark
said
In a related move late in
the four hour meeting the
council agreed to charge
customer* a flat 125 fee for
any work (outside of
emergencies) done after 5
pm and also charge $25
for reconnection after
water has been cut off for
non-payment
City Secretary Brenda
Richards reported that
there were some 25 to 50
customers cut off and
reconnected each month,
usually involving the same
customer* 'This will cut
down on some of the cromc
late payments." she noted
The council expressed
concern over a fall in at
tendance at the city*
Senior Citizen s Center to
Jewell Fen ter the site
manager for the Senior
Nutrition Program, based
out of Henderson County
Junior College in Athens
One of the center
workers' job b to contact
senior citizens in the Van
area, and Councilman
Charles Ellison suggested
that the worker contact the
citizens that have stopped
coming and ask for
suggestions on activities
and meals
“It would be em-
baraving to get a new
building and only have 50
people using it." he noted,
referring to a proposed ap
plication for an East Texas
Council of Governments
grant to build a new senior
citizen s center on the City
Park grounds
Visitor Clovis "Mule"
Ellison charged that there
were "cliques" at the renter
driving away those persons
who attended when the
center first opened. "You
can’t have any fun down
there now, I guarantee,"
he said
Mrs Fentor and new
Councilman Bill Lexer
noted that most of the
disagreement* were over
pet tv items and that most
of the blame foe the
decline in attendance
rested with the small uze of
the center and the lack of
parking space
Star Cable installer Gene
Wilbanks met with the
council to explain that
recent reception problems
were probably due to a bad
Transformer somewhere in
the city We ve corrected
our problem ' he said
“we re just waiting on
TPAL to correct their
leakage now "
Resident Billy Shoema
ker pointed out continual
*er*ice problem* but no
ted that the difficulties ap
parent!* arose from the
main Tyler office The
people down there just
don t care, he said The
council agreed to have Star
Cable dntrict manager
Chick Williams attend the
next regular meeting to ex
plain why Wilbanks re-
quests for help were not
answered more promptly
In other business the
council
tabled a review of Mate
landfill regulations but
agreed to wop accepting
tire* immediately.
agreed to look over an
old salt water line located
behind the Dairy Queen
Union Oil Company is
donating the line to use as
a sewer line for the newly
annexed region along In
terstate Highway 20

Fleet and Bobby Fugate,
but table acceptance on

Jack Perry called for Fire
