Campus Debate Proposal
Receives Dean's Approval
"I like the idea."
With these words Dean of Students .Garvin Beauchamp
stamped his approval on a plan suggested in The Optimist last
week to conduct a series of campus debates on current political
trends and philosophies.
A lively response to the idea by students faculty and'
administration has set the wheels turning to make the debates'
an actuality.
Ed Brown ACC debate coach suggested to the editor
and Dean Beauchamp that the debates be moderated by Pi
Kappa Delta debate fraternity citing a need for keen super-
vision in order to keep the matches from deteriorating into
harangue sessions.
Several ACC students have expressed a desire to par-
ticipate in the debates if they are brought about.
Commenting on the suggestion Dean Beauchamp said
tha the felt it would be wise to wait until the beginning of
the new semester and that the debates would definitely need
mature supervision.
The debates will need he added a willing and interested
moderator who will direct the matches in such a way as to
leave out personalities.
He concluded that free expression and exchange of ideas
on campus are very good and that for this reason the debates
should be kept on a high plane. The topics should be discussed
from a standpoint of the subject matter and not from how
the majority may feel on campus he said.

sophomore; Ronnie Roberts San
Angelo sophomore; John Fergu-
son Garland freshman; and Ter-
rell Reagan Waco' sophomore.
