Homecoming Shapes
Up "Perfect"
By RUSS WILLIAMS
OpHmUSporlt Editor
The word "perfect" Is one not to be used Hghtly but for
the life of us we can't find an adjective that fits this year's
Homecoming so "perfectly." .
Yes it was a perfect Homecoming. "The Music Man" in-
spired standing ovations four nights in a row the club projects
showed occasional touches of genius and no illnesses were
reported as a result of the free Fryed food.
But Moit Important . . .
To say (he least everyone was
in a gala mood by klckoff timo
of the ACC-Trinlty game. Every-
one sort of knew what kind of
chance Trinity stood of pulling
this ono out of the bag but still
the Tigers had Obert Logan.
By the end of the first quarter
however it seemed doubtful that
Logan was going to use ACC as
a doormat to another crown in
the small college rushing department.
Gripers Amongst Us
Some people are never satis-
ficd though. There were those at
the game that you just know will
have ulcers and gray hair by the
time they're 25. They wanted o
game of derring-do and a score
of 7-0. If there is a difference be-
tween perfect and ideal the dif-
ference between the scores of
Want Thrills? Here's Your Chance
North Texas has the potential
to provide all the close game
thrills that were lacking in the
Trinity contest and more.
The Eagles' line could best be
described by quoting Jim Murray
a sports columnist for the Los
Angeles Times. Writing of Ohio
State's Woody Hayes' battery of
vicious linemen Murray quipped
"The way they hit you don't
have to worry about cavities."
Coach Wheeler describes North
Texas as the "roughest part of
our schedule so far" and that it
will be. Wheeler will be taking
his own brand of molar mauling
defense to North Texas with a
good reputation.
To date the Wildcat defense
has allowed only 86.8 yards per
game on the ground. In passing
the Cats have given up Just 75
yards per game.
Yes there should be thrills a-

McWaters a junior this fall in
eligibility did not have a cam-

bruising 220-pound letterman is

bench.
SMITH WAS a unanimous AH-
MVC halfback as a sophomore
but slipped in the polls last year.
Still he was second in rushing
in the conference with 405 yards
on 103 carries for a 4.5 average
ond was fourth in scoring with
six touchdowns. He is a 9.7
sprinter and is the team's best
long distance threat.
Whitfield could become the big
gu in the attack. The stocky
junior is strong and has surpris-
ing speed. He hod 269 yards on
67 carries last year
COTTON MOORE ond Dave
Woodward lead the line corps
which has a 210 average. Moore
started about half the games last
year when he turned in an
excellent sophomore campaign at
tackle. Woodward developed fast
at linebacker to complement his
already strong offensive play at
The "Gonzales Gazelle" wor-
ried ACC fans in the early part
of the ball game by grabbing a
pass and sauntering within dan-
gerous range of the Wildcat goal
but at game's end the Tiger
whirlaway had to be content with
a 10 yards rushing.
This sort of action was typical
as the Cats contributed a 41-0
score of the "perfect" game of the
"perfect" Homecoming.
41-0 and 7-0 would best represent
it
It's always thrilling to see a
close hard fought game but as
far as we're concerned you can
trade the "closeness" for a 41
point margin any day. A person
is less susceptible to high blood
pressure that way.
plenty in this game. One thing
for sure it won't be a wide open
game as Trinity was.
As Coach Wheeler said it's
hard to pick any outstanding
player from the Trinity game. It
was really a team effort. How-
over we'd like to mention B. A.
Honey. The hard running back
had a 12.2 average against Trin-
ity. He led in rushing with 08
yards and his 01 yard jaunt was
the longest run from scrimmage
this year.
A joke pilfered from another
newspaper: "I was in the Army
for ten years and I never saw an
Aggie" commented one man at
a Texas A&M game. "What
branch were you in?" queried an-
other. The man quietly replied

Junior must be considered also.
The 280-pound tackle may be the
best pro bet of the bunch.
North Texas Is gifted not only
with a continual line of good
players but a top-rated head
coach in Odus Mitchell. Mitchell
has achieved ninth place among
active coaches with 15 or more
years of varsity tutoring behind
them.

the club All-Stars to a 10-12 vic-
tory. David Coffin stood out for
the dorm All-Stars.
The dorm stars struck early
with a 25-yard pass play from
Coffin ato James Abraham.
Quickly retaliating the club
stars hit back with a Colvin to
Dave Osborne pass. A two point
conversion put the club team in
front 8-0.
THE DORM giiddors wore not
to be denied and again it was
Coffin leading the attack. This
time it wos Tim Cayle on the
receiving end just as the half
ended. The dorm stars thus en-
joyed a 12-8 lead at intermission.
The clubbers went to work in
the second half and drove half
the distance of the field for the
only score of that period. Gary
McCaleb crossed the double
stripe on a toss from Vernon
putting the cap on the 'mural
football season for another year.
