Annual Lantana Celebration
Set For Week End at A & I
KINGSVILLE - Everybody
loves a parade!
Residents of Kingsville and
the surrounding area will gather
on the sidewalks of Kingsville's
main shopping street Saturday,
April 2, to watch Texas A&I
College's lantana Parade. The
procession will start at Memor-
ial Junior High School and will
go eight blocks down Kleberg
Street to the Kleberg County
Court House. It is scheduled to
begin at 1:30 p. m.
Lantana is the college’s an-
nual spring festival. This year
the parade, which was discon-
tinued for two years, has been
reinstated and Texas A&I stu-
dents and community residents
are busy working on floats and
decorating cars.
Seven floats will carry the
Lantana Queen, Jen Evelyn
Gutheridge of Sinton, and the
Lantana Ladies--Carol Vander
Stucken of Beeville, Annie Gon-
zalez and Norma Garcia of
Corpus Christi, Carol Ann Bit-
ter of San Antonio, Linda Garcia
of Raymondville, and Emily
Bridgers of Kinvsville.
A reviewing stand will house
a panel of three judges, accord-
ing to the chairman of the
parade, Lt.Col. Pershing Tous-
ley, professor of military
science at Texas A&I. The judg-
es will select the best float
and a revolving trophy will be
awarded the winner.
There will be 30 college and
community organizations spon-
soring cars which will carry
duchesses, princesses, and
representatives.
How flat a parade would be
without a band! To make sure
this parade has plenty of music,
the Texas A&I Marching Band,
the A&I Army ROTC Band,
the Sinton High School Band
and the Navy Band from Cor-
pus Christi will perform. Tro-
phies will be given the par-
ticipants.
Two drill teams will march:
the Kings Rifles, the college’s
ROTC drill team, and the Cadets
of America, a girls’ rifle drill
team sponsored by the Kings-
ville Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The parade will be led by the
college president. Dr..lam»sC.
Jernigan. Members of the Texas
A&I Board of Directors and
Kingsville city officials have
been invited to take part.
Lantana activities begin Fri-
day evening with the registra-
tion of high school representa-
tives from the South Texas
area. Selected by their local
schools, these teenagers will
be presented to the Lantana
Court in a 7:30 p. m. ceremony
in Jones Auditorium on the
Texas A&I campus. At 9 p. m.
an all-college carnival will
start on the college mall.
Saturday the parade will be
held at 1:30 p. m. then at
7:30 p. m. In Jones Auditorium
the Lantana Court will receive
the college duchesses, repre-
sentatives of various college
organizations. Following the
presentations both Friday and
Saturday nights, a variety show
entitled “The Fortieth Birthday
of A&I’’ will feature college
students performing songs,
dances, and skits.
The final event in the 1966
Lantana festivity will be the
Cornation Ball. The formal
dance will be free to college
students. It will be held in the
Student Union Building to the
music of the Blue Notes and the
Headstones.
