Tourism in Texas brings more than
just visitors. It also brings dollars •
and opportunities to Texas commu-
nities, both urban and rural. To help
explore tourism business opportuni-
ties in the North Texas area, a special
daylong workshop will be held on
Friday, May 17, at The Royal The-
ater in Archer City.
The workshop, sponsored by the
Texas Department of Agriculture,
the Midwestern State University
Small Business Development Cen-
ter and other local companies and
organizations, will cover an array of
tourism issues. Among the topics
will be "Nature Tourism in Texas,"
"Texas Tourist Markets," "Tourism
Networking," "Engaging the Com-
munity for Tourism" and "Making it
Happen."
Speakers will include representa-
tives from the Texas Wildlife Asso-
ciation, Texas Department of Trans-
portation, Texas Travel Industry As-
sociation, the Harlingen and Wichita
Falls Travel Information Centers, Al-
bany Chamber of Commerce, the
MSU Small Business Development
Center and the Texas Department of
Agriculture. State Rep. Rick
Hardcastle will be on hand for wel-
coming remarks.
Cost for the workshop is $35,
which includes lunch. Registration
will begin at 8 am at the Royal. The
event will run until 3 pm.
Texas has about 167 million visi-
tors per year. On average, a tourist
spends about $94.36 each day in the
state. Fourteen percent of all Texas
tourists engage in some type of na-
ture tourism, which includes every-
thing from bird watching to scenic
trail rides.
"Tourism offers big opportunities
for local economies," said Agricul-
ture Commissioner, Susan Combs.
"For farmers, ranchers and rural com-
munities, especially, this can be an
important way to boost income."
Additional sponsors for the tour-
ism workshop include Berend Broth-
ers, Brazos Telecommunications,
First Ag Credit, IESITX Corpora-
tion and the Wichita Falls Times
Record News.

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY GONE_
One of the largest trees on the lawn of the Archer County
Courthouse was cut down last week. The tree, rumored to
have been planted sometime after 1895, was dead, and re-
moved by Bouldin Tree Service. The job took nearly all day,
and was done in stages. It leaves a bright vacant spot on the
courthouse lawn.
