ACC STUDENTS working at State School pose at sign before beginning Bible classes.
By RONNIE PRICE
Picture this: a class of students
Who with shjnlng eyes eagerly
await and prepare themselves for
a Bible lesson taught to them by
an Abilene Christian College stu-
denta dream? No this is a
reality which grateful student
teachers experience each Sunday
morning at Abilene State School.
The student instructors are
participating' in a unique pro-
gram of Bible education. This
program is unique in its methods
and goals because its students arc
different from others. They are
.mentally deficient.
This fact might discourage
some who do not realize the. vast
potential that is wjthin the hu-
man mind. Those individuals
who are mentally retarded can
and must be taught. This is a re-
sponsibility shared by all of
society. ' '
The history of ACC's participa-
tion in the state school effort has
been relatively short. Chaplain
Standifer director of the State
School several years ago ap-
pealed for help from all the col-
leges and churches in Abilene.
There was no reply from the
churches of Christ or Abilene
Christian College and little re-
ply from others. Hardin-Simmons
and McMurry responded with a
few teachers.
Dr. Standifer approximately a
year and a half ago made an ad-
ditional effort to recruit teach-
ers. His appeal was directed to
the Highland congregation and
this time a sincere effort was
made to answer the call. The
need for teachers was announced
at the college class at Highland
and a small group consented to
begin teaching classes.
With this small beginning a
program of foresight and respon-
sibility took form. It culminated
into a work which last year grew
and developed beyond the hopes
of any involved. Under capable
leadership and organized effort
an average of 105 ACC students
taught the mentally deficient at
A.S S. .
This fall beginning with last
Sunday's session 69 students be-
gan again UCv "work of love."
It is hoped that this group will
grow to about 150-175 by De-
cember. Presently 125 students
are needed o adequately in
struct the mental retardates. The
program sponsored by the High-4
land congregation is supported
by students from various congre-
gations throughout the city. '
Students interested in partici-
pating in such a program should
contact student directors Foy
Richey and Johnny Bryant or
anyone of the state school teach-
ers on the campus. Faculty ad-
visers include Doctors Earl Clev-
enger and LeMoine Lewis.
It is an appalling fact that ma-
terial for Bible education to the
mentally deficient is sadly lack-
ing and in many cases non-existent.
It is the hope of ACC;8tu-
dent teachers that through this
unusual program' Bible school
material can be found and devel-
oped which will be made avail-
able to those Christians across
the nation who arc interested in
such a program.
Also it is the goal of the stu-
dents teaching to dispel certain
of the prejudices and. misunder-
standings concerning the capa-
bility and comprehension of the
mental retardates. Many are un-
aware of the fact that although
learning for the mentally retard-
ed student is many times a pain-
fully slow process he can and
ought to be Instructed. Ignor-
ance on the subject is perhaps
the greatest obstacle and know-
ledge the greatest asset
The need for such a program
could not haye been better ex-
pressed than in the words 'of
Dr. Standifer ''Jt is an absolute
necessity that I be helped in do-
ing this work. My deepest appre-
ciation is extended to those who
are willing to work .with me in
the common cause of our Lord."

And the result: It is heart-
warming for many to see that
those in the school respond to
life as they never have before.
An attendant once noted this re-
markable change when she stat-
ed "Since the students from ACC
have been teaching here the
children look forward to their
coming and brush their teeth and
put on the best clothes for Sun-
day school. The ACC teacher
brings a lesson that is looked for-
ward to every Sunday morning."
Teaching the mentally defi-
cient is a task requiring a genu-
ine appreciation and love for
others. The student teacher must
show patience and dedication;
must understand the needs
fears and anxiety of the mentally
retarded and-inspire a love of
God and others. The devoted
teacher brings control to the dis-
turbed patient purpose to a hu-
man being love to the rejected
and liveliness to a broken spirit.
