Navy Seaman Isaac J. Cox.
son of James C. Cox of Holliday.
Texas, is currently aboard the
aircraft carrier USS Constella-
tion which recently participated
with more than 15.000 Sailors.
Marines. Airmen and Coast-
guardsmen in a pre-deployment
exercise in the Eastern Pacific
Ocean.
. The U.S. Navy Third Fleet ex-
ercise, Pacific Joint Task Force
Exercise 97-1 (PAC JTFEX 97-.
1). involved 20 ships, four sub-
marines and various types of
fixed wing aircraft and helicop-
ters from the USS Constella-
tion Battle Group and USS
Boxer Amphibious Ready
Group with the 15th Marine
Expeditionary Unit embarked.
U.S. Navy and Marine Corps
forces were joined in the exer-
cise by Aior Force, Army. Na-
tional Guard and Coast Guard

Canada.
Seaman Tepfer
Receives Award
Navy Seaman Robert B.
Tepfer, son of Robert L. Tepfer
and Theresa K. Bottlinger, both
of Archer City, Texas, was re-
cently awarded the Battle Effi-
ciency Award, along with the
other crew members of the
amphibious transport dock
USS Cleveland.
The award, also known as
"Battle 'E"\ designates USS
Cleveland as the best in its
class in the Pacific Fleet. Tepfer
and fellow shipmates earned
this award through hard work,
dedication and teamwork. The
Battle "E" is also a reminder
that USS Cleveland crew mem-
bers have set the standard for
other ships in the Pacific Fleet's
amphibious force. Tepfer's ship
has demonstrated the ability to
handle tasks normally not as-
signed to amphibious trans-
port docks, such as maritime
interception operations con *
ducted in the Persian Gulf in
support of U.N. sanctions. This
is a first for this type of ship.
One of the keys to USS Cleve-
land earning the award is the
ships philosophy, called the
"Seven Starts". These are safety,
teamwork, mission, cleanli-
ness, training, professionalism
and battle readiness.
Tepfer is one of more than
1,300 Sailors and Marines
aboard the ship who left their
home port of San Diego in Oc-
tober for a six-month deploy-
ment to the western Pacific and
Indian oceans and Persian Gulf.
USS Cleveland, along with the
multi-purpose amphibious as-
sault ship USS Essex, the dock
landing ship USS Harpers
Ferry, and the 11th Marine
Expeditionary Unit, make up
the USS Essex Amphibious
Ready Group.
Tepfer's ship provides fast
transport of combat troops and
rapid launching ashore by heli-
copter and waterborne assault.
Landing craft and Sea Knight
helicopters operating from
Tepfer's ship can transport up
to 900 combat troops and their
equipment and supplies to
shore.
The 1993 graduate of Archer
City High School joined the Navy
in August, 1993.

PAC JTFEX 97-1 was designed
to evaluate and assess Cox's
ship, which deployed in April to
the Western Pacific Ocean and
the Persian Gulf. Cox's ship
participated in real-time war
games against other U.S. forces.
Cox's ship also conducted ex-
tensive damage control, com-
munications and tactical war-
fare drills in controlled battle
group environments, with em-
phasis placed on operational
and material readiness.
The 1995 graduate of Rider
High School of Wichita Falls.

gust, 1995.
