Dear Holliday City Council
Members:
We are being transferred from
outside the Metroplex to the
Wichita Falls area.
We’ve heard good things about
some of the smaller schools. So, we
have been coming up the last 3
weekends looking around. I as well
as my family were shocked at the
town of Holliday. We heard about
the successful academic program,
Lonestar Cup, Exceptional Athletic
record, etc. But, we were so
disappointed in how the town
looked as a whole. Does Holliday
not have Zoning Ordinances???
As we drove down Main Street we
saw Busses & Cars just parked in
fields, Old dilapidated run down
houses or metal sheds that didn’t
look lived in or used. We also
noticed an old dirty gas station with
weeds growing everywhere and
broken out windows. The unused
flea market just trashed out. Why
aren’t these things tom down or
removed??? Or better than that why
not turn one of these things into a
Youth Center for kids to go to and
have fun. I know it cost money.
Believe me we researched and got
(2) grants that are given to small
towns. The racial profiling is not a
qualification. We used the funds
to make a walking track with some
play ground equipment and a very
small waterfall. We had a car wash
and made $750.00
Which we used to plant trees and
shrubs around our schools. I know
the biggest eyesore as you enter
Holliday from Wichita Falls or
Seymour was all the junk. There are
old cars, tractors, pumps, metal
pipes, EVERYWHERE!
I talked to someone from another
small area school we looked at He
said you hear all this Hoopla about
Holliday but when you go there to
play them you are totally shocked.
He told us some local businesses
and business men run this town
and no-one will approach them on
improvements. Even a wooden
fence painted with your school
colors would cover some of the
(tractors & pumps, etc.) going into
your town. Both entrances really
look bad, I asked a woman at your
local daycare “why it is not kept
up or zoned”? She said “ believe
me that is a sore to many people”.
We definitely need some sort of
zoning but no one wants to put in
the time or effort. Why not have a
community clean up day?
Any one that wants to volunteer
can bring paint, rakes whatever.
We are from south Lake Carroll and
have one every six months.
It is a lot of fun and the turnout is
really amazing. I realize your
community doesn’t have a lot of
money. Home Depot donated us 6
gallons of paint and we painted our
Mascot all the way down our main
street and did touch ups on our
Welcome signs entering SLC.
Lowe’s and Wal-Mart donated
some trees and flowers which we
planted at different business
locations. I am sure you have lost
families wanting to reside in your
area due to the appearance of your
town. We have since decided to
send our 2 sons to Rider High
school they are good athletes and
it would offer the most opportunity
for them. Although, we wanted
them to attend Holliday. I am not
trying to be malicious but, I too am
from a small town but, it never
looked as unkempt and run down
as Holliday. I hope your
community comes together.
Because with the outstanding
school you have and some
cooperation from the businesses,
you are sitting on a gold mind.
Ray.
Editor’s Note: I spoke with
Mayor Allen Moore about the let-
ter to the editor that I received from
Ray and he assured me that the city
of Holliday is working on this. They
will be employing a new code en-
forcement officer sometime this
month. He stated that the physical
year has just started as of October
1st and that funds are being set
aside for clean up. He stated that
usually some of this clean up is
done in the spring when the
weather again permits as people
don’t like to do these things dur-
ing the winter months.
Mr. Moore said he agreed
with Ray that something surely
needs to be done and that was one
of the reasons he wanted to become
mayor. I know there was a city wide
clean up day this past Saturday. I
believe that the city is trying so let’s
give them a chance.
