City of Archer reminds residents
of trash collection regulations
O'
Dear Editor, believe, to Mr. Gary's article. We Dear Editor,
u/aat lact i trivA ncf» an to he. aratp.fnl anH thankful that I am writing in reference to the
Due to the increase in the number Section 9 - Exclusions. This Agree-

old west stereotype of a cowboy to
make a contrast with the Good Shep-
herd that Jesus called Himself. I am
very sorry that I offended some
people with my description of a
Marlboro type cowboy hero stereo-
type. I'm sorry that some misunder-
stood me and thought I was speaking
badly of cowboys, cowgirls, or those
who love them. I did not mean to.
I truly believe that most cowboys
are wonderful people and wonderful
husbands. We know that God loves
all people. We know that God wel-
comes all types of people into His
church and into His kingdom.
Gary Morrison said in his letter to
the editor that we need to admit that
we are all sinners. Yes, and besides
seeing myself as a sinner, I also see
myself as a poor foolish man who
often makes mistakes. And as Paul
called himself, I am a fool for Christ.
I know, as we admit that we are
sinners and make mistakes, we can
be filled with compassion, caring
and forgiveness for each other.
Rev. Jordan Gary
Dear Editor,
After having read Rev. Jordon
Gary's article "From the Pastor" in
your April 11, 2002 edition, I have
been trying to think of a reason for
him making statements and com-
parisons about cowboys as he did.
After some thought, I came up with
two probabilities: his ignorance of
the livestock industry and his envy
of the cowboy's true lifestyle he lives,
loves and enjoys.
I have also read the letters in this
week's April 18,2002 edition, "Let-
ters To The Editor" concerning this
article. In Kathy Morrison's letter,
she apologizes for Rev. Gary. I do
not think it is her place to apologize
for him. If Rev. Gary has any portion
of character and integrity of a cow-
boy, he will write his own letter of
apology.
Sincerely, Ted Burkett
Dear Editor,
As indicated in last week's paper,
many people had a lot to say about
Mr. Jordan Gary's article on cow-
boys. When reading articles or books
everyone has their own individual
interpretation of them. I agree that
Mr. Gary's letter was poorly worded,
but I don't believe it was intention-
ally written to be derogative toward
cowboys or cowgirls. For a lot of us,
the only understanding of the cow-
boy or cowgirl is what we see on
television, at the movies, or read in
books. So many times the cowboy/
cowgirl forcefully drive the cattle to
a different location, be it for new and
greener pastures or going to slaugh-
ter.
In contrast, the Bible depicts the
shepherd as loving & gentle. "I am
the good shepherd. The good shep-
herd lays down his life for the sheep,"
John 10:11. The Bible shows a close
relationship between the shepherd
and his sheep. "I am the good shep-
herd; I know my own sheep, and
they know me, just as my Father
knows me and I know the Father.
And I lay down my life for the sheep,"
John 10:14.
Comparing every characteristic of
the cowboy/cowgirl and of the shep-
herd is irrelevant and not the point, I

Jesus Christ is the good shepherd
and he lovingly and gently cares for
us (his sheep) every minute of every
day. He does not forcefully "drive"
us anywhere. Our path in life is
strictly our choice and it is a simple
one. Heaven or Hell! You either
believe Jesus is the son of God, died
on the cross for our sins, and rose
from the grave three days later, or
you don't!
As far as cowboys are concerned,
I don't know much about what they
do, but I do happen to be very close
to one special cowboy and I believe
he just might be the best one around.
He definitely loves his work and I
am pretty sure he knows each one of
his cattle individually! I also have
noticed that cowboys are content
with the simple things in life and in
general are more relaxed and less
stressed than the rest of us! So to
those cowboys/cowgirls who were
offended by Mr. Gary's article, read
it again and see if you don't get a
different interpretation. Also, for-
give we who open our mouths in
ignorance because we do not know
much about what you do.
Sincerely, Melanie Deen
Dear Editor,
I am writing in regards to Mr.
Jordan Gary's "From the Pastor."
You have NO idea what a real
cowboy is!!!!! There are many, many
cowboys that are very strong Chris-
tian people. You have made several
false statements in your article. You
may think they are a hard-faced ranch
hand, but you have no idea what is
inside. They are one of the hardest
working men and women you will
find. If someone is in a time of need,
they are always the first ones there.
They do care about their cattle and
their horses and yes, some of their
cows are named. They also always
know what calf belongs with what
cow.
Just because someone does not go
to church does not make them a bad
person. I do know some cowboys
that don't go to church and are still
firm believers in our Lord Jesus
Christ. We all have our own way
with our Savior. There are many
times after I have gathered a pasture
of cattle and thanked the Lord for the
beautiful surroundings. You never
know what God is going to being
riding when he comes back one day.
It could be a white horse. He could
even have a cowboy hat on as well.
I can not believe you would even
consider criticizing us in such a man-
ner. Y ou sure do not have all of your
facts straight about a cowboy's or
cowgirl's life...I bet you could never
make it on a cowboy's pay as well. I
am almost sure you get paid more
than what cowboys do. I know you
don't work half the hours they do
either. As far as going from woman
to woman, and friend to friend, that
is as well false. I know lots of cow-
boy families that have been married
long, long many years. As far as the
friend thing goes, once you have a
true cowboy or cowgirl friend, you
will never forget them. They will
always be there in a time of need.

article by Rev. Jordan Gary printed
in the April 11,2002 Archer County
News.
I am in hopes that when Rev. Gary
wrote his article, he was only trying
to express to people the great love
and concern that God has for each
one of us. But in making such a harsh
comparison between God, the Great
Shepherd and God, the Great Cow-
boy, he not only offended cowboys,
cowgirls, and me, but also may have
done harm to those who were in the
process of making a decision for
Christ.
Cowboys are the greatest category
of people I have ever met and pos-
sess some of the finest qualities any-
one could have - kindness, loyalty,
courage, gentleness, and devotion to
their family and friends. Sure, there
are strays and mavericks, as there
are in any category of people (in-
cluding the clergy). But if you are
looking for heroes, cowboys are
among the majority.
Cowboys are familiar with cal-
lused hands, leathered skin, and
working in the outdoors. When I
think of Jesus, I see a man with
callused hands, leathered skin and
working in the outdoors - a man who
was willing to die for your and my
sins.
Perhaps cowboys are more sensi-
tive to the spirit of God because of
the type of work they do; they realize
they have to rely on God and have no
control over the weather, unman-
ageable cattle, and what unknowns
are just over the ridge. Because of
the freedom that lives in the cowboy
spirit, their place of worship is often
the wide-open spaces where God's
voice is heard very clearly,
I hope when The Great Cowboy,
My Savior, calls us for the Last
Roundup, I'll see you there.
Proud to be the Mother, Grand-
mother and Friend of Cowboys and
Cowgirls, Marie Flemming
