Girls Take Consolation
At Seymour Tourney
Mary L. Snider
If you think you’ve got
problems, what about Ewalt
Smith of Elbert? He was buying
groceries and told Ann Kirksey
that he was getting to be a
first-rate housewife since he was
not only buying groceries but the
.week before he had even done
the laundry. Than J. H. Sims,
who was in earshot, exclaimed,
“That’s wonderful ’cause you’ve
never done anything yet worth a
dime.’’ Then Ewalt sez to Ann,
“Well, 1 really don’t think he has
room to talk.” I might add that
Ewalt’s wife is a nurse at Olney
hospital.
Wouldn’t this be a drab ol’
vyorld if people couldn’t joke in a
feood-natured wayV^Qr..; ifthere
were no Aggies? Nor Aggie
jokes? Nor transplanted Okies
now living in Texas? Or vice
versa? Or versa vice?
Bro. Pete took me to task [in
an indirect way) by saying he
didn’t say that Oklahoma was
God’s country. What really
happened, I think, was that he
meant it in a joking way, and of
course I pounced on it. Bro. Pete
sez where he went last week
(Oklahoma) was not God’s
country but God’s forsaken
country.
That reminds me of this. Jim'
Mcng came by the office the
til her day with this story of how
this part of Texas was settled.
Said .Jim. “All the people from
ihc east and north came this way
t,> settle. They got as far as
Texarkana where there was a big
sign This Way To Oklahoma.’
All who could read went to
Oklahoma and those who
couldn’t came to Texas.” Now
HE said that. 1 didn’t. Please
remember that.
It’s like i’ve been trying to tell
you. 1 came from Oklahoma,
l ived there all my life until last
March. 1 liked it there. But I
moved and 1 like it here. I like
Texas. 1 like Texans. But 1 STILL
like OU football. So bear with
me, will ya?
Here in America we take the
privilege of being able to vote for
granted. As a result, many,
many people don’t even exercise
this privilege. Which makes this
story a bit unusual. Marilois
Kirksey, a missionary to Brazil,
wrote her parents, the R. E.
Kirkseys, about the recent
elections. They are compelled by
law to vote. Each person over 18
years has a document which is
taken to the polls and signed. If a
person doesn’t have this signed
v dppuniehtgit is a sad story when

The Throckmorton Houndettes
came from behind after losing
their first game in the Seymour
Invitational Tournament against
Holliday to win their next two
games, enabling them to take the
consolation trophy home with
them.
In the first game against Holl-
iday, the Houndettes jumped to
an early lead, 8-2, at the end of
the first quarter and held that
lead to the end of the half,
leaving the court 6 points ahead,
21-15. But the third quarter
showed the Holliday girls
bringing with them some
“dressing room spunk” to take
the lead, 35-33 at the end of the
third period. They went on for
a 48-45 win.
Patti Allen led both teams with
27 points. Jan Rogers had 14,
Teresa Cribbs 3 and Kim Young
l.Bj
hander
to lead both teams with a
24-point talley as th^ girls made
a decisive bid to stay alive with a
77 to 39 win over the Seymour
Panther girls.
This game was a runaway as
the Houndettes led from the first
quarter, 26-4, and with the
defensive efforts of Katrina
Cook, Rhonda Rogers and
Debbie Rodgers, kept the lead
43-16 at the half. Third quarter
score was 56-29.
In this game, behind Teresa
was Jan Rogers with 21 points,
Patti Allen with 12, Katrina Cook
with 2, Brenda Broyles with 8,
and Kim Young with 10 points.
The third game against
Mergargel was a close one as the
lead changed hands throughout
the game. The end of the first
quarter score was tied 10-10, and
the Mergargel girls went ahead
by only one point, 18-17 at the
half. Throckmorton came out in
front in the third quarter,
however, ending with a
lead. In a hot fourth,
Megargel girls made a play to
come-back but could not, finish-
ing the fight three points behind,
38-35. This gave the Throckmor-
ton Houndettes the necessary
win to take the consolation
trophy home.
Jan Rogers led the
morton girls with high
honors this game with 16, Patti
Allen had 14, Teresa Cribbs and
Brenda Broyles both had 4 and
Kim Young had 2. Katrina Cook
took high rebound honors with
10, followed by Rhonda Rogers
and Debbie Rodgers with 5 each.
Jan Rogers had 4.
The Throckmorton “A” boys
did not fare as well as did the
girls in this tournament as they
dropped their first two games
and were eliminated from further
play.
In a low scoring night, the
Hounds were held to only 29
points as the. Holliday boys
chalked up 66 to win the first
game. Marshall Allen was high
scorer for the Hounds with 8
points, followed by Van Moses
with 7, Thomas Ash with 6, Mark
Styles with 4 and Mark Wilson
and Jimmy Scrogum with 2
apiece.
The second game against
Munday saw Thomas Ash put 19
points through the bucket and
Marshall Allen put away 15. But
it was not enough to come from
behind as the Munday Moguls
walked away from this tight
game, 58-44, to completely
eliminate the boys from further
tournament play.
Other Throckmorton scorers
were Jimmy Scrogum with 6
points, Van Moses and Mark
Styles with 2 points apiece.
Pictured above are the "A" team girls who brought
home the Seymour tournament consolation trophy.
Seated [I. to r.] first row: Teresa Cribbs, Debbie
Rodgers, Patti Allen and Kim Young. Second row:
