Elision in Thursday’s annual Fall Flower Show staged by
Kfermit Garden Club.

MRS. JOHN GAMMILL, hostess, was presented an award
of appreciation for her tea table arrangement at the show.
I j MRS. W. H. McCLURE was sweepstakes winner in
Horticulture. Her display included 14 varieties of hybrid tea
roses.
MRS, RAY KAYSER, club president, received an Award
of Merit in Horticulture and received a Tri-Color ribbon;
fall Flower Show Held In Gammill Home

of’Merit for her entry of a pink
ptjlyantha rose, Fairy. She also
won the Tri-Color award in the
arrangement division. This
entry was placed on a bedroom
ta&le and Bible scripture, in
keeping with the show theme
was “The firmament of His
Handiwork”, Psalms 19:1.
{Mrs. Marvin Owen received
thb Sweepstakes Awards in the
Aftistic Division with two blue
ribbons, one which was placed
oh a den TV and the other on a
bedroom table.

Circle Meet

hostess at her ranch home
Tuesday morning for a meeting
of Newark Circle, First United
Methodist Church,
{Mrs. Paul Kennon and Mrs.
John Foster led a continuation
of the current study, Inner
life. Study session was
followed by a general
discussion of the topic
presented.

bipught devotional and prayer
arid Mrs. Foster gave closing
prayer.

Biruce Wright, Mrs. G. T.
Gilligan, Mrs. J. M. Lipham,

Evans and a visitor, Mrs. Joe
Porterfield.
Special awards, were given Violets which was shown by
by the judges for the Mrs. McClure,
educational exhibit of African The Junior Garden Club was

Mrs. Gammill was presented
an Award of1 Appreciation for
her tea table, which was not
entered for competition.
The table featured a stately
arrangement of white
chrysanthemums and emerald
foilage.
Each Club member took an
active part in the show.
Joe Hunters
To Oklahoma
Dr. and Mrs. Joe Hunter left
Kermit Friday for Altus, Okla.,
to be with her mother, Mrs. J.
G. Moore, who will celebrate
her 88th birthday today
(Sunday), Oct. 19.
The Hunters plan to return
home in about two weeks.

Observe Silver
Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Hunter
observed their silver wedding
anniversary Sept. 27 at their
home, 537 South Avenue D.
Their children planned and
arranged the courtesy.
The anniversary cake was
elaborately decorated in the
25th anniversary theme and
the refreshment table was
centered with a floral
arrangement.
The couple received pieces
of silver and chrome and other
gifts from friends and relatives.
The Hunters were married
Sept. 27, 1944, in Gonzales.
She is the former Verna Mae
Braener. They were both
reared in Gonzales County and
met in 1941. After they were
married they lived in
Indianapolis, Ind., while he was
stationed at Camp Atterburg
and also were in Ninevah, Ind.,
during the time he was
stationed at Fort Harrison as a
war prisoner guard.
After Hunter received his
discharge from the Army, they
moved to Luling in August of
1945. Hunter served with
Company K, 141st Infantry,
36th Division.
Their daughters were born
in Luling. They are Carol, who
is now Mrs. Ron Key and lives
in Odessa, where she works in a
hospital. She was graduated in
August from Odessa College as
a registered nurse.
The other daughter, Betty,
is Mrs. Vernon Wilkinson and
lives in Farmington, N. M.
Their son, Jack, was born in
Kermit and is in the seventh
graded

Helping Hands 4-H Group
met Wednesday. We elected
officers and divided into
groups.
We planned our menu for
next week.
Cenda Connally is president,

vice-president, Kelly Stanford
is secretary and Lawanna
Campbell is reporter.
Those present were those
above and Tammie Oglesby
and Czarena Erwin. We missed
Rebecca Seabolt and Lona
Lynn Biles.

Connally and Mrs. Pat
Stanford.
Bishop Metzger
To Visit Local
Churches
The Most Reverend Sidney
M. Metzger, Catholic Bishop of
El Paso, is now visiting
Catholic parishes in West
Texas. He will pay a visit to St.
Thomas and to St. Joseph’s
churches here in Kermit
Saturday, Oct. 25. On the same
occasion he will administer the
sacrament of Confirmation in
both churches Saturday
evening.

MARRIAGE ANNOUNCED — Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth
Speer of Jal, N.M., have announced the Oct. 3 wedding of their
daughter, Martha Joyce Speer, to James L. Collins, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lafoy Collins of Fort Worth, former Kermit residents.
A reception was held in the home of the bridegroom’s parents,
following the ceremony. The newlyweds are living in Denton
where he is attending North Texas State University.

ENGAGED—Mr. and Mrs. Marklin J. McElmurray of
Greenbriar Lane, Cleburne, announce die engagement and
approaching marriage of their daughter, Patricia Ann to Randall
Paul Bryan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Bryan of North
Avenue A, Kermit. Wedding date is set for Jan. 24, at Saint
Mark Methodist Church in Cleburne.
Mrs. Farthing Hosts Council Meet
Mrs. Larry Farthing was
hostess to a Tuesday meeting
of Ladies’ Council of First
Christian Church. Mrs. Gene
Taylor served as co-hostess.
Mrs. Martin Hammer,
president, was in charge of the
business session with Mrs. Sam
Estes giving secretary’s report
and Mrs. Steve Johnson giving
treasurer’s report.
The Council voted to
continue monthly visitation at
the Wink Nursing Home with
the next visit set for Oct. 21.
Yearbooks were presented
and projects were discussed.
Included in the year’s program
is support of a Bible college
student, a kitchen shower and
clean-up for the church kitchen
and carpet for the nursery.
Mrs. Johnson, study leader,
led the lesson, Books of the
New Testament. Meeting was
dismissed with the Mizpah
Benediction.
Others present were Mrs.
Bob Foster, Mrs. Harold Baird,
Mrs. Jack Hill, Mrs. Bertha
Kimbrough and a visitor, Mrs.
Kay Reed, mother of Mrs.
Farthing.
Thespian Play
Tickets Available
National Thespian Society
of Kermit High School has
announced that tickets to the
play, Kind Lady, are now on
sale. The play is to be
presented Saturday,Oct. 25, at
8 pm. in KHS Auditorium.
Tickets are $1 for adults
and 50 cents for students.
They may be bought from any
Thespian and also will be
available at the door.

Brownies Plan
Wiener Roast
A Brownie Troop which has
not yet received its number
planned a wiener roast for
Saturday, Oct. 25, at Girl
Scout Little House. The party
will be from 4:30 until 6;30
p.m.
President Pam Glander
opened the meeting and the
Girl Scout Promise was
repeated. Dues were collected
and pins were discussed.
Helen Hawkins served
refreshments.

Lease Observes
83rd Birthday
Mr. and Mrs. Van Lease
recently had guests in their
home. The occasion was to
celebrate Lease’s 83rd
birthday. Lease and his wife
were surprised Wednesday
night when their neighbors
came and brought cake and ice
cream and a small celebration
was held. Neighbors attending
were: Mr. and Mrs. W. A.
Lease, Mr. and Mrs. John
Armstrong and Pam and Jeff,
Mrs. Opal Goble, and Mr. and
Mrs. H. R. Bryant and
daughters Eleanor and Vanda.
Later in the week, a
birthday dinner was held in
honor of Lease’s birthday and.
guests attending were: Mr. and
Mrs. H. Martin from Mena,
Ark., Mr. and Mrs. W. L. House
from Texarkana, Mr. and Mrs.
Coyle Rush, and Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Ward.

Mrs. W. L. Barries was high
score winner when Delta Deck
Bridge Club -met Wednesday
night in First National Room.
Mrs. Ben Bell was second
high and Mrs. Doyle Allen and
Mrs. Johnny Stout were
hostesses.
