Local SRSU Student On Tour With Musical Group
Tommy Shillingburg of
Kermit, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
E. Shillingburg, is one of 15
students of Sul Ross College
who are on an eight-weeks tour
of U. S. personnel in eight far
eastern countries.
The Musical Majority singers
of Sul Ross State University
began an eight-week tour of
the Pacific Command on a
USO tour Oct. 16.
“We represent the majority
of college students who don’t
smoke pot or demonstrate,”
director Ross Hise says. Hence,
the group is the Musical
Majority.
The singing group is one of
20 from U. S. colleges and
universities selected by the
National Musical Council to
make USO sponsored tours to
military installations during the
current academic year. Sul
Ross will be the first of six
Texas institutions, to send
entertainers overseas this year.
The USO will sponsor
musical groups during the
current year from Texas

Boost Prices
Following the initiative of
the leading U.S. and Canadian
newsprint makers, Crown
Zellerbach Corp. and
Consolidated-Bat hurst
Newsprint Ltd. raised prices $5
a ton.
Crown Zellerbach, one of
the top 10 U.S. makers, said it
was raising its price for
standard newsprint, effective
Jan. 1, 1970, to $147 a ton in
the Western marketing area. A
spokesman said the increase
will apply to all grades • of
newsprint and rotoprint except
the lightweight 30-lbs.
newsprint. That grade’s price
will be increased $5.50 a ton to
$155.50.
In addition, Crown
Zellerbach Canada Ltd., the
concern’s subsidiary, said it
will raise its newsprint prices to
the same level as the parent
concern.
Consolidated-Bathurst, the
newsprint subsidiary of
Consolidated-Bathurst Ltd.,
said in Montreal that it would
raise its U.S. newsprint price to
$152 a ton, effective Jan. 1.
The price increases were
initiated last week when
Bowater Sales Co., subsidiary
of London-based Bowater
Corp., announced a $5 a ton
increase to $152 a ton in the
East Coast and inland market
areas. Bowater’s announcement
was followed by a similar
increase by Abitibi Paper Ltd.,
Canada’s largest newsprint
maker.
Meantime, the American
Newspaper Publishers
Association, a trade group,
announced its opposition to
the increases and asked
newsprint makers to “reassess”
the situation. The association
termed the boosts “a harmful
departure from past history.”
Among the companies that
haven’t yet disclosed new
pricing plans are Price Co.,
Quebec City; Canadian
International Paper Co.,
Montreal, subsidiary of
International Paper Co., New
York; and MacMillan Bloedel
Ltd., Vancouver. ,
