Coach Bill Barsch’s Kermit
net team took a 16-8 decision
from Pecos Saturday * with a
clean sweep in girls’ doubles
and seven of eight in girls’
singles. Kermit won three of
eight boys’ singles matches and
four of six boys’ doubles.
BOYS’ SINGLES.
In a pro set, Danny O’Leary
lost to Brownlee, 1-8; Gary
Smith, Kermit, dropped two
straight to Cantrell, 4-6, 4-6;
Mike Crabb, Kermit, was
defeated by Qurioz, 6-2, 6-1;
Delma Odom, Kermit, lost to
Felps, 0-6, 2-6; Mike Kingston,
Kermit won over Vinson, 8-6,
in a pro set; Bobbie Wiesman,
Kermit, lost to Cantrell, 3-6,
6-1, 3-6; James Butler, Kermit,
defeated Qurioz, 13-11, 6-3;
Track Workouts
To Get Tougher.
After last week’s practice
track meet with Midland High
and Andrews, Kermit coach
Waymond Griggs said the
Yellow Jackets are entering a
tougher phase of training and
times will not be as fast as
earlier in the season.
On a soft track last week,
Jim Bob Franks ran a 9.9 in
the 100-yard dash and sped to
a 22.5 clocking in the 220.
Griggs said the relay teams
needed work on their handoffs,
with some poor passing seen
last week in the practice
session.
The sprint relay foursome
of Franks, Jerry Adams, Bill
Derfus and Russell McDonald
had a time of 44.8.
A time of 3:34 was turned
in by the mile relay team of
Billy Copeland, David Galindo,
Adams and Franks.
In the weights, John Waller
tossed the discus 166-8,
bettering his throw of the
previous week by almost two
feet. Tom Bel ding duplicated
his throw of the week before,
with a heave of 142 feet. Scott
Arledge threw 113 feet and
Luis Rodriquez had a toss of
110 feet.
Waller also improved his1
distance in the shot, with a
throw of 53-6H, better than
the 50 feet he recorded the
previous week. Rodriquez had
a toss of 40-2.
The team added three
members from the basketball
team, who will all be running
the hurdles. They are Dan
Dampeer, Pat Stidham and
Wyndell Caviness.
The Jacket thinclads will be
entered in another triangular
meet Friday at Monahans. Fort
Stockton and Monahans will be
the other two teams in the
meet. If the weather does not
permit, the meet will be held
Saturday. Time for the event
to begin is 4:30 p.m.
and Mike Joiner, Kermit, won
over Hamilton, 8-5, in another
pro set.

over Felps-Qurioz, 6-3, 6-4;
Joiner-O’Leary lost to
Hamilton-Brownlee, 5-7, 6-1,

Large Crowd
On Hand To
Greet Coach
A large crowd was on
hand Tuesday night at
Kermit Community Center
to greet the Yellow
Jackets’ new athletic
director and head football
coach.
The occasion, hosted
by the Quarterback Club,
gave Kermit fans an
opportunity to meet Greg
Sherwood and his family,
who have moved here
from Liberal, Kansas.
Sherwood introduced
his family and gave a short
talk, emphasizing the
major role the fans have in
giving continuing
inspiration to the football
team. He added that he
and his family are
impressed with Kermit,
the fans and the school
administration and
facilities.
Cook, Bounds
Honored At
Golfers In
Action At
Grid Banquet j gjg $prjng
Guy Cook and John
Bounds were named top
linemen and back
respectively, at the annual
football banquet held
Monday night at the high
school cafeteria.
Cook, offensive split
end and defensive safety,
was the top pass receiver
for the Jackets during the
past season, with several
near impossible catches.
Bounds was the leading
rusher, with some 1500
yards during the year, and
last week, signed a letter
of intent with Texas A&M.
Grant Teaff, athletic
director and head football
coach at Angelo State
University, was the
featured speaker at the
event; ■ Honored-^ut the
banquet were members of
the varsity, junior varsity,
their dates, the ninth grade
squad and all coaches.
Seventh,
Eighth Win
With Teresa Thompson
hitting five points and Janice
Ditto and Vicky Patterson
adding four apiece, the Kermit
seventh grade took the first
game Monday, shocking
Imperial, 15-1, in volleyball
action.
Coach Gloria Barr’s team
also won the second contest,
this one by a 15-3 margin.
Denise Bryant was the
sparkplug in the second game,
with a whopping 10 points.
Terry Stidham added three
points for Kermit.
Ip eighth grade action,
Kermit also won in two
straight taking the first game,
15-4, and the second by 15-5.
Sherri Dodds paced the
scoring for Kermit in the first
game, with five points and
Catherine Beaumont and
Debbie Glander had four
points each.
In the final contest, Brenda
McCalib was Kermit’s top
scorer with nine points and
Phyllis Hawkins had three.
The junior high teams will
host East Pecos today
(Thursday) with the first game
set for 5 p.m.
The Kermit Yellow Jacket
golfers finished in a tie for
15th place in the overall
standings in the Big Spring
Tourney held last Friday and
Saturday. Coach Ken Mays’
linksters placed third among
AAA teams entered.
The tourney was played
over two courses and the
Jackets shot a 333 the first day
of play. Saturday, they were in
better form and carded a 313.
Mays took only five boys
and their individual scores
were:

Kermit Wins Title In
Pee Wee Tournament
The Kermit team won the
first place trpphy, in the Jaycee
sponsored Pee Wee Boxing
Tourney, held here last
weekend. Accepting the trophy
was Vernon Wood, coach of
the Kermit team. He is assisted
by Sidney Wood, Jack Akin
and John Riley. The event was
for boys 6-13 years of age,
with entries from Kermit,
Pecos, Odessa and Midland.
Trophies were presented by
Ken Edwards, president of the
Jaycees, and Chuck Warren,
project chairman.
The Monte Cooley Trophy
was presented by F. E. Cooley,
in remembrance of his son who
was killed in Vietnam. The
award went to Joe Carrasco of
Pecos.
