YORKTOWN. Nov. 11.—In one lover right tackle for 22 and an-
of the hardest fought and most other first down on the Cuero 22
cleanly played ball games in Dis-
trict 44-B this fall, the Yorktown
Wildcats Thursday evening halted j 'noted on
the powerful Cuero Gobbler offen-
sive machine to nose out the visit-
ers 7 to 0 before an overflow crowd
of more than 1500 cheering specta-
tors.' Coach V. H. Mattingly's well-
drilled Cats drove over for the lone
tally erf the evening late in the
second quarter and held on to their
precious seven-point lead until the
end of the game.
The holiday game afforded holiday
visitors everything. As the open-
ing whistle blew partisans of both
teams felt fairly sure of a victory,
but the Wildcats were not to be de-
filed. Each club boasted excellent
offensives which indicated the score
would be large, but the fast-charg-
ing Cat forward wall has evidently
been under-rated by observers.
Work of the winners was cut out
for them—the task erf stopping
Lewis Mayne, 175 pound triple-
tweat artist of the Gobblers around
whom the Cuero offensive was de-
signed this year. And stop him they
did. On only few occasions was the
elusive Mayne able to shake into
the clear, partly because of the
mediocre blocking offered by his
teammates and partly because the
Yorktown line refused to be
blocked.
Officiating Good
In Referee Menger, former Iowa
player, Yorktown school officials
secured one of the best arbitrators
tn the circuit. He followed each
play closely and turned in one or
his best games of the season.
Wright and Neuman ably assisted
in other pfficial roles and each ap-
peared well trained in his particu-
lar job.
Pact that there were only two
penalties during the entire game is
a fair indication of the type of
play turned in by both clubs. The
Gobblers drew a five yard setback
for a backfield man in motion before

Excellent blocking on the part of
the Wildcat line and backs was
these jaunts. The drive
was halted on the Cuero ten after
Soehnge had picked up 12 at left
end and fumbled, the ball being
recovered by Cuero. After making a
first down. Mayne kicked to Schal-
ler on his own 38 for no return.
Yorktown turned in another first
down on line plunges featuring
Schaller and Goehring to give them
the ball on the Cuero 41 as the
quarter ended.
Cuero recovered a second York-
town fumble on their own 39. but
on the next play Mayne's fumble
was taken in by Marmalejo of the
Cats on the Cuero 40. Line plunges
by Schaller gave Yorktown the ball
on Cuero's 28. but the Gobbler line
strengthened to hold them for three
downs at this point. On the fourth
down. Goehring, whose passing was
sensational, to shoot a first-down
pass to Schaller on the Gobbler 18.
A second pass. Goehring to Schaller
but Schaller fumbled as he was
tackled and Cuero recovered on the
,Cuero fifteen yard line.
Line plays with Miller and Mayne
carrying, netted the Gobblers an-
other first down but they were
forced to kick a moment later. Re-
spondek was downed on the York-
town 35 for no return on Mayne's
boot. On the first play. Goehring
picked up six at right end. He then
dropped back to drop a beautiful
aerial Into Marmalejo's arms on the
Cuero twenty- four for a first down.

Cheatham broke through to drop
Schaller for a four-yard loss. A
Yorktown pass was batted into the
air by two Gobbler backs before it
fell into the arms of Marmalejo for
a nine-yard pick up. Goehring then
passed to Schaller for a first down
on the Gobbler thirteen. Schaller
picked up six at left guard and
then made it first down on the
Cuero one yard line by a jaunt over
