The offensive moves and
scoring proficiency of Ronnie
Hearne have amazed a legion of
basketball coaches players and
fans the past two seasons.
The Abilene Christian College
junior has moved at a fast pace
as a collegian. He's moved so fast
that he's closing in aoon the
all-time ACC scoring record a
mark held by former Wildcat
great Jim Reynolds.
Reynolds amassed 1618
points In three years. Hearne has
scored 1070 in two years and
needs 549 points to better the

standard. It's certainly wHhln
reach. Hearne had 578 points
this season and the total put him
ninth on the all-time list. His
22.0 scoring average was the
fourth highest ever.
Hearne's speciality is putting
the bail through the hoop and he
does it in a multiple of ways . . .
a long arching one-hander from
outside; a bank shot from the
comer; a drive down the baseline
or the middle; or a drive a fake
and a fallaway jumper.
His fingertip control of the
ball is fantastic and it enables
him to get off an accurate shot
from any angle. He uses his left
hand also not only on layups
but on IB footers as well
John Ray Godfrey Wildcat
All-American of 1967-68 and
currently the fourth ranked
point-producer In ACC history
gave his seal of approval on
Hearne last season in a road
game with Angelo Stale.
Heame moved in fast from
the corner driving the baseline
only to have his path blocked 16
feet from the basket. He stopped
quickly and jumped high with
the Angelo defender blocking his
view of the basket from the right
side. He shifted the ball from his
right hand to his left (In midair)
and put the ball through the
basket with his left hand.
Godfrey was too stunned to
say much immediately but later
called It one of the greatest
offensive plays he had ever seen.
Against Oklahoma City last
year Ronnie found himself
one-on-one on the fast break
against the Chiefs' heralded Rich
Travis. Coming down the floor
on the right side Hearne took
the ball behind his baok picking
It up with his left hand without
losing a stride and laid it in
from the left tide of Use basket.
Travis was faked out com-
pletely and shook his head In
disbelief.
ACC coach Garni e Hatch calls
Hearne one of the best one-on-one
offensive performers he's
een. "Ronnie it almost impos-
sible to stop with one man. He
has an uneanny ability to get
el ear for a shot and his touch is
fantastic" said Hatch.
"Arlington put a box-and-one
(zone with one playing man-to-man)
en him and he still got
30" the ACC coach added.
Ronnie's dad Aven was a star

hometown of Mllteap. "We lived
SO yards from the gym and I
pent hours and hours there
seven days a week" said Hearne.
"I worked on everything not
Just shooting. I guess it paid
off."
Hearne nixed offers from
Texas A&M Hardin-Slmmons
Howard Payne and Pan-
American to come to ACC. He
played on the freshman team
but was held out as a
sophomore. The 6-3 star thinks
the extra year helped him to
learn and mature as a player.
